Having just had a quick browse, I'm guessing they intercept the pressure sensor outputs for fuel and air and reduce them thereby upping the boost pressure and fuelling, rather like the common rail diesel plug in jobs?

Sadly, this old girl will be going next weekend in favour of an E36. I've had some thoroughly enjoyable moments with it.

Nice to see someone else getting big waves laugh

Just got a F13 640d M Sport - so here's a photo.

Carbon black, black leather and 19" alloys. This is a very fast car in a straight line and a major change from my previous (and very good) diesel 2.0 litre BMWs.

My previous F10 520d SE company car - a very efficient mile muncher.

My earlier E90 320d with AC Schnitzer wheels and kit + engine tuning + Eibach pro springs.

You must be over the moon with the new motor thumbup BMW`s 4 pot diesel engine is one of the worst engines they have ever made by a country mile for me so I would imagine you will love the new motor big time, enjoy it. smile

i don't know if i agree with that, the 4 pots I've driven have been awesome, the 123d is an absolute belter of an engine...

The 3 litre diesel in the 640d isn't brilliant at low revs either and is a touch unrefined too, diesels for me are just a tool to do a job of covering large miles for relatively low cost.

Can't be many N/A diesels still being manufactured? Does VW still offer their SDI engine in the Golfs?

No

And most new petrols now are forced induction as it's more economical.

Yes I'm very pleased with the 640d. I've nothing against the 4 pot diesels... very good engines for what they do although the 3 litre twin turbo on this is in a different league.

I also know the diesel vs. petrol debate rages on this and many other forums.

I've only had BMW diesels for the past 15 years because I do a lot of miles and have seen them improve dramatically in terms of refinement and performance.

The stats on 0-60, 50-70 and torque show modern diesels eclipsing many petrol engines. This increasingly means the marketing department at BMW have a job on their hands promoting the benefits of some of their equivalent petrol cars over a diesel (e.g. the 640i)

I haven't driven a 640i / 650i so it's hard to compare vs. the 640d ... although I suspect a lot of petrolheads haven't driven some of these modern diesels either.

I think the type of comments you sometimes see on forums about diesels rattling like a tractor etc. are a bit outdated. To me, the 640d sounds refined at low revs and very sporting when pushed towards the limit. It's a big cruiser / GT car rather than an out and out sports car but does that job very well.

I'll agree that the sound of a V8 / V12 is always likely to sound sweeter than a diesel.

However, the technology, performance and efficiency of these diesel engines is something else... and I'll enjoy the 640d for what it is... a very fast and efficient car.

I am a big fan of petrol V8`s and I have run two of them as daily drivers but I agree they don't really make much sense financially, we picked our 640d up at the end of November last year and have already done nearly 7k miles in it so for us a diesel does make some sense.

I only find the 640d unrefined at low revs because I am used to a petrol and when you drive the diesel and petrol back to back it shows the diesel up a little I think, don't get me wrong its a cracking engine for a diesel and it offers great performance with decent economy so its a nice compromise.

I love the interior of the 640d and its a great place to spend time and my only criticism of it would be its size and it can resemble a boat to drive sometimes! love the look of it though and it has a lovely feel good factor about it.

I just cant love BMW`s 4 pot diesel engine much though but as you say as a tool to do a job they hit the spot for most I would imagine.

Enjoy the new motor. smile
