1st car after 15 years of company cars (not worth showing), now opted out so fingers crossed my Mineral Grey Monkey doesn't go belly up!
Will change the photo when the sun comes out!
Very nice! The 320d is a great balance of permormance and running costs, similar speed to a late 80's 325i, but with much more refinement but a less impressive soundtrack! I've run a couple of '20d's when I did more mileage and they were both great cars. Its the most popular for a good reason Will change the photo when the sun comes out!

The 6 pot diesel isn't massively refined admitted but it's poles apart from the 4 pot diesel, and I didn't reckon much at all to the 4 pot diesel in my 520d.

It's not slow but it's not fast either, they do make sense for big miles because they are cheap to run and offer fantastic mpg but for me I reckon it's worth going for the 6 pot diesel for it's improved refinement and extra shove.

Would have to agree with that! The 6 pot diesel isn't massively refined admitted but it's poles apart from the 4 pot diesel, and I didn't reckon much at all to the 4 pot diesel in my 520d.
Had an E46 320td Compact (150bhp) and replaced it with a 123d (201bhp) - despite the latter being pretty quick they both sounded like tractors!
IIRC the E46 330 was 184 bhp to start with, then it had 204bhp (facelift time maybe)?
The 1/3/5-20d with the N47 engine started life at 177bhp and later was rated at 184bhp, but they still sound agricultural!
If I had to do high miles I would look for a 25, 30 or 35d, but thankfully I don't so I now only run straight 6 petrols - what a revelation!

Bought this 2 weeks ago to replace an '07 FN2 Type R

I've only done about 150miles in it so far but it's worlds apart from the Type R, in a very, very good way.
Expect to do a LOT more miles! I'm 5 months in and still taking it out for needless journeys 2014 M135i with Adaptive Suspension, PDC/Comfort Pack and 3 years left on the service pack.

My wife borrowed it this week for a touring trip around Cornwall - I really miss them... all 322 horses

Do mine eyes deceive me or is that Oxford Green? Didn't know they offered any green on the M5, never seen one!Nice to see the E39 has been getting some love here lately. My 535i has been faultless and am about to get the 520iT back after the clutch caught fire!

They are pretty rare and I've yet to see another on the road. It's one of only 40 produced in Oxford Green 2 (although there were also 21 pre-facelift cars produced in the earlier 'Oxford Green') out of the total build of 2595 RHD cars. Mine is also one of only 21 RHD cars with full caramel leather and a number of other rarer options such as active seats and split fold rears.JonJon2015 said:

There is only one RHD Oxford Green 2 E39 M5 with Active Seats and folding rears, but two in Oxford Green 2 with Full Caramel interior. The last 3 digits of your VIN are 709! DSP but no Nav I see. RichardM5 said:

Bingo. I wondered if you'd recognise a few of your statistics I bought a mk4 nav to retrofit but I'm not a fan of 15 year old navigation systems and decided that it would make the rest of the car feel older, in a weird kind of way. I've more recently been (maybe still am) tempted by the NBT retrofits that people are starting to put into E39s but the counter argument to that is that the car would no longer be original, and making it more complicated is likely to make it less reliable. For now I'll stick with Tom Tom and my trusty old AA atlas and look forward to doing things the old way from time to time, finding my way from A to B via the back roads (which is kind of what this type of car is all about anyway).
