Oh great, another hideous overpriced oversized pratwagon hits the road.

Am I the only one who thinks six-cylinder E46 coupés criminally underrated and thus undervalued?

Thank you cool

It's Silverstone Blue, an Individual colour on the E46. BMW did a factory 'S54 Edition' for the UK and 50 cars were made. No mechanical changes but all had this colour paint, Dark Estoril Blue leather interior and a lot of the options list included as standard (no heated seats though!).

There are 20 manuals and 30 SMG's, mine's a manual driving

According to the stats, outside of the 50 'Edition' cars there were 6 other RHD coupes and 20 LHD coupes in Europe, plus a further 3 in the USA.

Yet it's smaller than your e39 touring.

The M3, yes - an unusually subtle colour for an M3 too. However, I was referring more to the non-M cooking models - the M3 can hardly be called underappreciated!

An X3, smaller than my E39 Touring? I don't bloody think so... even the F31 3er Touring is bigger than the E39, and the X3 is much taller.

E39 touring is considerably longer and only an inch or so narrower. Height is irrelevant, as it doesn't mean it takes up any more road space. It's also clear that an e39 touring can be every bit the pratmobile of any X3.

You're stretching the bounds of the words 'considerably' and 'only' in your arguement aren't you?

The E39 isn't completely and utterly pointless, it's a great all-rounder which anyone sensible could see is a great car, one of the greatest BMWs ever made. The X3 is completely and utterly pointless, hideous, vulgar, mediocre at best at everything...

E39 Touring dimensions: 4805mm long, 1800mm wide, 1445mm high. 2830mm wheelbase.

F25 X3 dimensions: 4657mm long, 1881mm wide, 1661mm high, 2810mm wheelbase - so 148mm shorter, 81mm wider, 216mm higher, 20mm shorter in wheelbase.

Most of the difference in length (a whisker shy of six inches, which I'm prepared to call considerable) is in the E39 having a useful boot, which the X3 lacks. The X3 is eight and a half inches higher (what does that do for the handling, or propensity to roll?!), and over three inches wider (and if there's one criticism I have of the E39, it's that it's too bloody wide for the roads in my neck of the woods!). To be fair to the X3, the proportion of wheelbase to overall length is about 2.5% higher, so presumably more weight contained within the wheelbase.

Possibly, although my point still stands. It was more to do with the fact that someone who's chuffed with their new purchase, contributes to a thread where they're simply asked to show their BMW, only to get slated with comment like oversized pratmobile.

ETA.

Whilst an e39 M5 (or even a 540) might well be considered a great car by many, the lesser models are good bangernomics but little more. The interiors on those I've driven are pretty nasty. Especially the wood effect trim and saggy comfort seats. That said, I'm sure there are folk that like them but one of the best BMW's ever? Hardly.

Greatest within the context of the mainstream. The lesser E39 is still a lovely thing to pole about, as I can attest from taking it for a 120-mile drive - just because - yesterday, throwing every which kind of road at it. The seats could be more supportive (those in my 535i are better), and the wood trim isn't exactly Bentley-level, but it's a beautifully-built, solidly-engineered thing with real character - certainly better than the E61 or F11. The 'greatest' comment, incidentally, came from my local BMW main dealer, where the boss man told me that the E39 was the best car he'd ever had to sell in 25 years in the business, confirming my own view that things have just gone downhill since the mid 2000s. By way of contrast, the X3 is exemplary at absolutely nothing whatsoever - mediocre at best at most of them - every time I see one, I just think, how badly do you not want a 3-series Touring? The only excuse for it would be if it offered some off-road ability, but it doesn't - it's just a taller, soggier, more cramped AWD 3-series Touring.
