Did the E60 get the better of you?

Yes to be honest! After spending a fair bit on it ( oil filter housing gasket, thermostat, fan belt, rocker cover gasket, spark plugs, brake fluid, new tyres) and tidying it up cosmetically, it continued to throw up faults. Most lately the engine management light came on, the display started showing a transmission malfunction, and it was using a suspiciously large amount of coolant.. having driven a brand new F30 3 series, completely trouble free for 3 years prior to purchasing the E60, I couldn't be bothered to spend any more on such an old car, and thought I'd cut my losses and pick up something new again. The E60 also felt like a big step backwards in terms of technology. I'll stick with new motors from now on I think

I worked on this amazing M3 a couple of weeks ago.
Decided to save for an F30 after I get married in the summer.

I don't blame you to be honest, an old BMW can throw up some big bills, especially at the cheaper end of the market. Were it me I would have an E39, or a late E60. The early E60 models don't really do it for me.

Our family car arrived last week! Mainly used by the missus for school/nursery run etc, Specced quite a lot of extras best choice was the Adaptive LED's which are fantastic! and the adjustable damper settings which work well. Ok ok its front wheel drive etc etc but as a tool to carry around 3 kids (one in a wheelchair) and all the related stuff its rather good. We went for a 218i so its the 1.5 3 cyl turbo petrol. Much nicer than the equivalent Zafira/Scenic/Sharan methinks.

The x18i engine is now a 1.5 turbo 3 cyl? I can't keep up with the BMW number ranges now biggrin I thought they were still de-tuned 2 litre 4 pots. My mate was impressed that my car had a 3.5 litre engine in such as small car and he has no idea how the shoe horned a 4 litre into the new 1 series!

Yes they are very confusing now although bmw badge engineering has always been strange, the 3 cylinder 1.5 comes with 136hp it actually sounds quite good if you rev it out and its quite nippy low down. I though it would struggle with 7 people in the car but it copes quite well.

I think the naming strategy is quite simple.

x14i is equivalent to a traditional 1.4
x20i is equivalent to a 2.0
x40i is equivalent to a 4.0
Etc etc

It's so that it was easy to understand the hierarchy. Easier that saying it's a 315i but has the power of the old 318i. Or having 3 different 320i outputs.

The actual displacement and badging haven't been wholly consistent for a long time. E46 320i was a 2.2 for example, the e36/5 316ti was a 1.9, the e39 523i was a 2.5 and the e23 745i was a 3.2/3.4 turbo.

Lovely car. Ordering one next month. What spec did you go for? Anything you regret having or not having?

Mine is a pre reg so I dint spec it but it's auto, private windows, driver comfort pack and Harmon Kardin sound. Can't remember if it has anything else ?! It's very fuel efficient for this sort of car which I find amusing ! Albeit with my heavy foot more like 24 mpg. 3rd gear is when you know you have some power and enjoyed some easy over takes in it
Value for money short of an m3 or m2 this is a great little car with a good noise even if partly sound engineered

Sorry meant to say no apparently standard stereo is crap but only thing I would have liked was the active suspension but other than that no quibbles
I would not have had the manual as it's apparent they are quite different to drive and a bit itchy and well the turbo torque and 8 gears in the auto work well.

Sounds good, how would you rate the Hk? 24 mpg is decent. Also why do you want the adaptive? Is it not "sporty enough" or do you want to comfier?

Hk seems good but not exactly a 2000 watt subwoofer system !
No I had read the more limited performance of the standard suspension but it is fine for me. I'm sure the adaptive is firmer on sport setting giving more yaw potential but I'm not planning On setting lap records in ours when I have other cars for fund driving

Nice motor but has the facelift buggered up the front end a bit on these? Manual seats seems a bit stingy on such an expensive car too
