Plus the 535d is still a big luxury barge, a lovely quick barge I agree, but somehow the powerdoesn't seem needed in that sort of car. The only time I used to think "What a fantastic car this is!!" is when going across Europe, on the German Autoroutes it made pefect sense, sat at 140mpg for 3 hours you can cross serious distances. But all in all it was a bit souless, I swapped for a 335i, around 2 mpg less, on a different level for performance and a lot more nimble. But still souless and a bit senseless for the UK.
520d/320d for every day and something fun for the weekend.
Just to add, not having a pop at anyones choice of car, just showing it from someone elses persective.
As a single car and for someone who doesn't care that new 535d's are loosing a grand a month at the moment then why not, but for a lot of people the 520d is the perfect run about, it never feels slow and it pays for itself in fuel consumption and depreciation over a bigger car.

I'm not convinced your steed is OK if you're only getting 18 general, 23 currently.
She has performed fine on the rollers in april, went really well at Santa pod in feb and was immense on a trackday in may.
I am about to go and get fuel as im low. I will re-set it on the i-drive for the 8 mile trip and drive like a granny and see what i get. Will post back shortly

On the way, i drove like a right old fart, 1/4 throttle. Trying to keep the gauge on the dash under the speedo between 30-50mpg. There are 5 roundabouts i had to negotioate also.
Do you think there is somethign wrong with my car still?#
On the way home, i drove like i usually do
Now you see why mine is low, and the reason i dont think you drive your car as hard as you say you do.
After 3 miles it was down to 11mpg, but after that, the last 4 miles was stuck behind traffic so it improved.
AS you can see by the mileage, it was re-set both times. My car is a march 07 E92 3335d with DMS map. (roaded 344bhp)

'new' 520d's arent much better - a friend of mine has a sept 07 520 M Sport, nice spec and colour, new £31K, hes been offered 18K by a BMW dealer for it. If you only ever drive 7 miles to and from work I'm not surprised you mpg is so low as the car hasn't even warmed up!
As mentioned, my average is over a huge mileage and that's why it's showing what it is.

I range from not using the car one day to doing few hundred the next. The car has over 40k now.
The obc stalk is registering 24 today actually. I do generally drive very hard.

Why would that frustrate you? The torque is much lower down on a diesel, and with the twin turbos there is power turbo lag, just power, power and then more power.Plus its an auto so all the powers there with non of this revving and gearchanging nonsense

Everyone said to me i would get frustrated. But i didnt, not once did the car feel breathless. The power does not tail off on these twin turbo diesels like other diesels. Pulls hard to the redline. Albeit only 5k, but then Only engines like the CSL etc rev to 8k anyhow, so not that fdar behind.The torque IS UNBELIEVABLE on track, pulls like a train out of every corner. No hiccup in the power delivery. Every gear is eaten up by a another massive swell of torque.
I was quicker than a V8 Vantange, E36 M3 Track car, M3 csl (only just though), E46 M3. Even down the straights.
The steptronic box is well mated to the 335d. The car has paddles so you can choose gears for corners etc. First few laps i was trying to shift down to early, i needed to wait till the revs dropped a bit more before i could downshift.
Remember a Diesel has Won le-mans a few times now mate, also Seat are campaigning Diesels in the BTCC and are the fastest things down the straight.
Diesel is great for the track, the E92 chassis is very nuetral and I had no understeer even with that ''heavy'' diesel up front
