I own a 2002 e46 318i.

The orange oil light has started to appear now and again but does not stay on permanantly.

I am assuming this means the oil needs topping up? (No owners manual with me to consult).

Also, what oil is recomended for this model.

Regards,

There are 3 stages of oil light in the 3 Series.

1) Orange light after the engine turns off. This is simply the level indicator - it just means the oil is on min and you should top it up within the next few hundred miles. Personally I do it as soon as possible.

2) Orange light comes on whilst driving. THis means its now very low and you really do need to top it up.

3) Red light comes on whilst driving. Dangerously low. Stop and fill it up before you kill the engine.

Oil wise, Castrol Edge 0w30.

Thanks for the information. It was just the level indicator. Popped in a litre of oil. Job done. Thanks.
