I have bought a E90 320d with 48,000 miles.

I've changed from a 05 GTi and although the diesel pulls well, delivery isn't as smooth or doesn't seem as strong. So I am thinking of one of these tuning boxes...

http://www.carperformancepartsuk.com/shop/prodshow...

Or considering a remap but not sure which to go for. The tuning box cheaper, but do they deliver what they promise inc MPG increase or likely to cause engine probs? any suggestions for other makes or advice?

Thanks

K

I fitted a similar device, a 'Tunit' (search www.tunit) to a 150 BHP Golf. Made a huge difference and I ran it from 10K to 75K miles like that. sold car and passed device to mate with 130 BHP A4, worked well on there with no resetting and that's where it still is 5 years since I bought it. Highly recommended.

You seem to be implying not all is right with your car - you might want to get it checked over and/or compare it to another car with the same spec. No point in trying to tune a car if the baseline isn't 100% OK.

I would agree, its worth having it looked at just in case, though i wouldnt expect the delivery of power in a 320d to be as smooth or as strong as a GTI anyway.

Thanks for your replies.

Don't get me wrong the car seems to run ok, has full BMWFSH and isn't a slouch, maybe I'm expecting too much by comparing to the GTi. I am already enjoying the big cost savings and the car itself, which more than compensates.

DSM2, gona read bit on how the plugin's work *have rough idea) and check out Tunit as sound promising. Did the car return similar, less or more MPG with the Tunit mod?

It was certainly no worse, and neither is the A4, which it is still fitted to. Sometimes I imagined it was better but the consumption was mainly decided by my right foot. Before or after the Tunit, I would get anything between 37 and 60-odd depending how driven. Overall very high 40s.

On the Golf there was a slight 'plateau' at about 2300rpm, when the car would seem to take a deep breath and then launch itself off! (Theoretically, it was up to 180bhp and 20% more torque. On the A4 it is smooth all through the rev range but isn't overall as impressive because it is a 130 in a bigger car.

One issue. the clutch was barely up to it in the golf. In higher gears, after a hoon, it would occasionally slip if given full throttle at maybe 3000rpm. Easy to drive around and avoid that treatment though.

BTW, 5 minute job to fit or remove, after initial programming. Car in for service, take it off. Get it back put it back on. (If warranty is an issue)

Codes stored in the ECU remain there until cleared by BMW or someone with a compatible OBDII tool. The car can't clear the codes by itself, eg. by running normally with no mods for x period.
That is a quote from babybmw.net thread re tuning boxs .the guys that fitted my box who are in and out of bmw performance mag said they must check the codes after i have taken my box off for a service (its only 5 months old). This is a blow because i did not get it remapped for warranty reasons
