I can't believe the price of these cars. Surely they can't be that much more to run than a 5 Series. I rang up one guy who has dropped £6K off his asking price in 2 months and still no takers. Full BMW service history, lots of worthwhile extras and he has said "just come and drive it and make me an offer - I might say yes".

Is there anything to look out for in particular?

No advice but I was browsing these the other day just out if interest and they seem massively cheap at the moment.
Not the prettiest BMW by a long shot but still a nice car.

I thnk it is "each to their own" but I think they are the most fantastic looking BMW saloon and cannot believe the crazy prices these cars are not selling for. These must represent one of the "credit crunch" bargains.

I'm just not sure if I can afford the running costs.

They are all either Coupe or Cabrio. They don't do a 6 Series Saloon. Thats what the 5 Series is for.

Running costs aren't that bad, if you do a search there are a few older threads that talk about this very subject.

Tempting, aren't they? I know of someone who does intersteller miles in one (drives to Italy from Scotland and then back again) for his business, and thinks his 645Ci is just an awesome machine for it. Better even that his last car, the M3.

Oh, and I think with the right colour and wheel combo, they look bloody awesome. Like a shark for the road indeed.

I love the 6 Series and at the prices they're reaching now it's hard not to be tempted... except they're young enough to incur punitive road tax which I have no desire to pay whatsoever. It's one thing paying a lot to run a car because it costs a lot to run, another thing to pay a lot to run a car because our cynical and dogmatic treasury has some spurious 'green' excuse to think I should.

You're not wrong - it's just in my eyes that 4 seats+roof=saloon. wink

I have had mine a couple of months now and love it. I have Alpina alloys on which I think look great but I know they are not to everyones taste.

i've always shy'ed away from big big engined cars because of the associated running costs. Up until this last year i've always done anywhere between 25 and 50k miles pa so would financially criple me.

This last year i've done 8k! this will be the first time ever that i will service a car based on time and not mileage!

so given i live <1 mile from work, and do a very small mileage, just how thirsty is the 645i ?

given my current mileage i'd expect it'd make less than a fiver a week difference in fuel, but the thing that still puts me off is that if i want to go out for a spin of an evening and do say 100 miles (not difficult) it's going to cost me so much more that it will make me think - do i really want to go out. (if that makes sense)

I have managed to get just 8mpg while having a some what brisk drive, then I got 18mpg on the motorway, again, I was not hanging around as I only get to drive the car every couple of weeks.

However 20-25mpg should be about right and is around what Mrs GMan gets on her drive to work.

Hi,

I often average around 19-20mpg in and around London, pottering about. I also had to blast down to Abergavenny (from Heathrow T3), leaving at 4.30pm Friday on the dot. I arrived there at 6.15pm. During the start of the motorway section about 10 minutes out of LHR, I reset the OBC and got just over 29mpg the whole way. I can certainly live with that.

As a car it fills so many needs and desires for me that, yeah, I can sigh when looking at the Road Tax aspect, but it's to be enjoyed. It's very fast. It can cruise. It can hustle along. It can carry a lot in the boot, and you CAN carry others in the rear. And looks wise, it polarises and could never be seen as bland.

I suppose that if everything in the used market is taking a bath, well then you just have to focus on what you really desire, and not worry so much about the economics........

My thoughts only....

The M6 is much better value. Have a look on the AUC site!

tbh the road tax doesnt bother me, it's a one off payment per year easily budgeted for

sure i'd rather not pay it, but i'm not going to loose any sleep over it - and i'm certinately not about to buy a daewoo matiz instead

It's interesting what you say about the M6....I tested one a few months ago, lovely metallic blue, with cream interior....Stephen James Enfield really couldn't move it for quite some time.
And yes, the performance is phenomenal, but day to day, I really couldn't see how much more of an improvement it would make over what I currently have. I'm in no way suggesting that my 645 runs as fast as an M6, but for the extra outlay, I'd never realise it day to day, that extra 1/10th, you know? Phenomenal car, but at the 52k they were asking (then 51, 49995...etc..), all I thought was, no......

As for road tax, yes it's a one-off payment and not a huge deal. It's more the principle behind what the Govt are doing.....But £400 are Smarties if you're thinking of running a V8 bruiser or V10 missile.

Dark Blue on Alpina wheels is utter cloud9

Agreed about the blue with Alpina look!

About prices one thing I would think about is spec:
The thing with the early cars is maybe that someone forget to get Professional Nav over Business. Bluetooth (in this range of car) is a must have. A sunroof (just vent), would be more desirable. Then it's things like Active Steering and Dynamic Drive. Of course some purists may balk at some of these things but when someone is looking at the difference between 19k and closer to 30k then it's in the goodies. TV....Multi-changer......I could go on. But this is the same story for most nice cars on the used market.
