I've never driven either so I'm ideally placed to comment on these two.

The S2000 is a hard-edged two seater convertible.

The Cooper S is a "cute" little hatchback.

S2000 all the way. Not because I like them, but because I can't stand the idea of a Mini being "fashionable" or whatever rubbish made Foxtons buy a million of them.

That is all smile

In fairness there probably isn't all that much between them in straight line speed - why do you think you'll kill yourself in the S2000?

Are you after a soft-top particularly? I'm intrigued as to why your choice is these two cars only.

If you are not used to rear wheel drive a S2000 can catch you out in the wet. The Cooper S is a great car, we have a late one with the turbo engine and it's really good.

They really are two different cars. Which one depends on your needs i.e do you need 4 seats etc.

I think they are great and do what they are supposed to do very well.

And they are very pokey too, running costs are pretty low, residuals are great, they go anywhere, and you don't have to rev the nuts out of it to get anywhere wink

I don't have enough good words for the cooper-s.

Forget the s2000, if they laugh at you for a beamer, then they are going to roll on the floor with an s2000.

Hell at 19 I would not want to pay the premium on a cooper-s.

But get the cooper-s out of the two.

The insurance is not alot on a cooper s to be honset its only £200 more than my fiesta so i think ill just go for a cooper conv then i get the best of both worlds perhaps not the english weather but a conv smile

Well you could get a cooper-s convertible.

Not reason why not, I prefer the hardtop on looks as the convertible has not been facelifted yet and will be superseeded in april 09 which will affect values.

Just a thought, but is now the time to be buying either? £3k on insurance is, frankly, ridiculous.

Ignoring the above, what are you after in a new car? Possibly there is something that suits that is neither of those two.

As a thought, if you like the idea of a 2 seater roadster but don't want to the worry of the power of an S2000, how about a Z3 1.9? Cheaper to buy, run and insure...

Hmmmm...Cooper S Conv or S2000.

Of the two I would buy an MX5.

My wife had a cooper s for about a year, and she loved it.

Plus points: It was quick (and felt it), handled well and was well screwed together.

Minus points: The suspension is hard as hell and gets wearing if you have a long way to go.

She then wanted a topless car so went and looked at a new cooper s vert = didnt like it at all. With the roof down it looks wrong and with the roof up it feels cramped and visibility is shocking.

So solution, she went and got herself a new MX-5!

Go for a Mini - they are so much fun to drive! Driven an S2000 on track and had a few boxsters which I guess are quite simialar and the mini was more fun to drive at lower speeds as its limits are lower. I love them.

personally would go for the cooper s - you will have more fun(more safely), more practical, lose less money when it comes to resale, costs less to run and, imho, they are more fun to drive on the road (as opposed to tracks and even then it would be close).

and they are popular for a reason, shame there are SO many around but they are great cars and many a car mag has said that they punch well above their weight on the twisties and would pretty much stay with anything incl 911!!

s2000 has had its day now as well, starting to look a little "old hat"....
