Just looked on Parkers for the Combined MPG and its as follows (oddly the 330i is no different to the 325i ....)

325i = 31mpg, 189bhp, 254Nm, £300VED
330i = 31mpg, 231bhp, 300Nm, £300VED
320d = 49mpg, 147bhp, 243Nm, £150VED
330d = 42mpg, 201bhp, 410Nm, £205VED

Assuming Petrol is £1.09/ltr & Diesel is £1.209/ltr and ave milage of 12k p.a. then the fuel costs is as follows:-

325i = £1926
330i = £1926
320d = £1351
330d = £1577

Well, thats interesting to know. I guess then, it depends if you want that extra power from the 330i, compared to the 325. I'm happy with my choice, but was looking for what i have within the price band i was comfortable with.

I'm sure looking around enough there will be some well-maintained 325/330s with reasonable mileage and will probably work out a cheaper alternative in the long run compared to going for a newer model. Or i could just be being biased as im 23, and am more than comfortable with owning a 52 325ci with decent miles and knowing that the re-sale value in a couple of years will be relatively close to what i paid for it.

Depends what you call relative. I doubt very much a 325ci will sell for £8k+ in 2 years.

To the OP, general consensus is that the 2.5 is a sweeter, smoother engine but needs revs. This uses more fuel and many people find that the 3.0 is only marginally thirstier (1-2 mpg at most).
All other costs are the same for both so you may as well get a 330.

Well, i'm not looking for £8k+ in 2 years as i paid £6800 for it, so in 2 years time, if i managed to get £5-£6k for it, i'd be more than happy.

I do agree with the points about a 330 though. If i had a little extra cash up front at the time of purchase, and it wasn't for the fact that i found this one by chance and bought it for below what it was currently worth, then i would have considered a 330.

Misread the post, apologies.

I've had a 52 reg 330ci sport since 2004.
Only a few extras - Leather, HK, folding mirrors & bluetooth.
I'm the 2nd owner and its currently on 70k - if it was worth £5k in 18 months with 80k on it I'd be a happy boy.

I tend to always go for a 2nd hand car loses 22.5% every year from the value at the start of that year

So in your case purchase price £6.8k
Year 2 value will be £5270 - so in that year depn of £1,530
Year 3 value will be £4084 - so depn in yr 2 will be £1,186
Year 4 value will be £3165 - so depn in yr 3 will be £919

So in the 3 years of ownership i.e. sell on day 1 of 4th year you will have lost £3635 or £1,200p.a. on average which is very good.

Clearly it could be a lot worse or not as bad but if you stick to 22.5% you should be there or there abouts.

Ah, but, thats taking 22.5% from the price that i paid for it, and not necessarily what the book price actually was at the time of sale. Like i said, i consider my purchase a lucky one, as most BMW's i found of the same age, same spec/mileage etc.. were a good grand/grand and a half more , and i just managed to do a decent job in haggling it down.

I haven't actually done a glass's check on my car, so i wouldn't know exactly how much its re-sale value was at the time, but i normally do the usual, of basing my sale price around that of other private sellers with the same spec.
