Yeah you can, loads of ebay, just plug it in.

It will work, you need your dealer or a garage with Autologic (of which there are loads around) to tell the car it is in, then when you take the car in to BMW you will get updates too.

Please dont be giving people the impression that an e60 NAV retrofit is 'just plugging it in'. It can be done but it is a very extensive piece of work for either the brave, naive or dealer to do for you.

Heres an extract from one of the BMW forums...

"if you want the built-in nav, sell the car and go get one that has it. I did the retrofit myself and the coding at the dealer. I don't regret it- I didn't find it difficult and I like challenges, but judging from your post you don't sound like the kind that's handy with a wrench, meaning the cost would skyrocket. Map updates do not require going to the dealer for programming like the above post says, you just pop out the old dvd and insert the new one. Software updates for the system (ie the operating software) do.

If you're going to let someone else disassemble your interior, and use new parts, you're looking at $4k+, more than enough to swap out your car for a same-year car with the nav.

to give you an idea of what needs to be removed to run wiring:

rear C-panel
rear seat
driver's side door sill trim on both doors
b-pillar trim
underside of driver's side dashboard
center dash wood trim
center a/c and radio trim
entire center console (to get to idrive controller)
driver's a-pillar

you need two wiring harnesses that are not available in the US. I had to get a friend in the UK order them for me and ship them over.

and then you need two trips to the dealer, the first to update the car to the latest software first, and then a second trip after you've installed everything to get the software for the nav uploaded to the unit. these two trips need to be pretty close together, as the car must be on the same software version the dealer has to accept the retrofit coding."

You can plug it all in, connectors are the same, the two wiring harness are for the mic and the fan that the nav unit needs. that is all.
The way BMW tell you to do this is remove half the car to run a coax cable to the shark fin, or to your telematics/bluetooth unit in the boot. A £9.99 GPS antenna plugged straight into the unit and tucked under the dash works as well if not better.

You need to find a garage with Autoligic, Russ at BMWorx knows how to code it properly, but there are loads all over the country and Autologic can tell them what to do.

You need to edit the vehicle order, delete the option you have for the radio and put in SA606 for business or SA609 for professional, then let the car go to sleep, when it wakes your car will think it has come from the factory with the nav.

I have retrofitted the nav in an E90, which doesn't even have iDrive, simply a case of making up a harness and tapping into power, ground and can hi and lo.

Going through BMW is a waste of time, the parts are in excess of £3k. They charge you for updating your car which although can take up to 3 hours is only 15 minutes at most of actual man hours, and then they charge you for the long winded way they change the vehicle order, so it starts to get pricey.

It takes less than 30 minutes to get the nav up and running, and no more than 4 hours coding (normally about 2 hours) and most Autologic garages will charge around £50-60 an hour.

An e90 is a different beast than an e60 to upgrade. If you know differently, then you'll be of great interest to all the major BMW forums who are saying to the contrary.

I take it you had to replace your dash in your e90?

The E60 and E90 are the same, the nav units are also the same, simply a different fascia on them, as are the monitors and iDrive controllers, it is again the same for the 1 series, although the monitors are obviously different.

The E60 is the easy one as the wiring is already there as it comes with iDrive, if you have voice but no bluetooth then you have to put a wiring harness from the CCC to the mic, or run a cable from the CCC to a new mic in the roof panel if you want voice.
To add voice you need an activation code from BMW that matches your vin number.
If you have bluetooth though you don't need to do all that though if you already have voice.
The only other wiring you need to add is for the fan on the CCC, this is 3 wires that go into the back of the radio harness, they just slot in, takes 30 seconds.

You only need to take the car apart if you run a cable back to the shark fin antenna, but even this is not actually correct, you should really run the cable to the bluetooth module, the GPS can get it signal through that.
However, just put a GPS antenna into the CCC directly, the one at Maplin for £9.99 with and SMB connector works a treat, tucj it under the dash and you get full signal. Reduces install time from 3 hours to 30 minutes max.

The E90 needs a new dash, but even that is only a 2 hour swap, it is 5 screws and designed to be easy as it has to be replaced everytime and airbag goes off.

I am selling a kit at the moment for an E90, this shows whats needed for that car.
Even with that the car doesn't need coding, everything will work, but when you take your car into BMW and they do updates it will not update the idrive, if you code it you will get updates atomatically.

I tried telling them on e60.net what needs doing ages ago, but they seemed to want to make it hard work for themselves for some reason??

Well, i guess i'll let people draw their own conclusions then.

Personally, if either buy an e60 with NAV or buy an e60 without and enjoy it.

I started reading this thread as I quite fancied a 535d Touring. I quickly became side-tracked by the interminable (and bewildering) pronouncements of Welshbeef. Having searched his other postings (I know!), I'm thinking of applying to the Appeal Court to remove the curfew and various restraining orders against me on the grounds that I represent a considerably less significant threat to the well-being of society in general and BMW dealers in particular.
I might be able to shed some light on why the pedometer strapped to his wrist (Oh come on, we've all done it) registered the thick end of 6,000 impulses. It's almost certainly got something to do with his intention (if he ever gets round to it) of requiring leather for its "wipe-clean" properties coupled with the fact that he remarks on driving "one-handed".
Apparently he's under the impression that his wife is away "on a hen". If I were him (No! Please God, no!) I'd leave the keyboard, kick my way through the pizza boxes and Pot Noodle tubs and have a quick look in her wardobe/knicker-drawer. Empty? There's a surprise!
Don't bother phoning her, she's changed the number.
