(a) its a fairly naff spec (it only has business nav which is naff rather than nav pro) and very few other extras.

But it has the engine!! I'm coming out of a 911 which doesn't even have a glovebox, mate.

(b) Its heading towards four years old

So? 13,000 miles and six years of warranty left!

(c) It still has a long way to drop

Hmmm, maybe, but it's a lot of car for £22k. And it will be a keeper.

(d) A 535d can be bought for less and will cost less to run

Come on, a diesel? Barf. V8 woofle, please.

(e) A 530d can be bought for less and will be easier sold

Ditto.

(f) A 530i can be bought for less and is still a very nice petrol car without the starship running costs and 'snow off a ditch' depreciation curve

Ain't no starship!! Cheap warranty, only group 17 insurance, a service every 18,000 miles?! Heavy on fuel sure, buy hey.

I'm sold, frankly.

How are you coming up with 6 years of warranty left? One year will come standard with it, expect to pay £1000 a year to continue the BMW warranty.

If its a keeper then yes, if thats your bag. I change my cars too often and that would be one of those cars that you'd be more popular if you had AIDS come resale time.

I can see how it would have appeal to a limited market.

Nothing like £1,000 per year for extended warranty, more like £500. Doesn't get expensive till the car goes over 60,000 miles.

I think the M5 warranty is £1200 or £1600 over 60k miles.

For non M cars it's about £500 ish. Big attraction.

I agree, good man! I'm looking at flogging the old 540i barge in the new year and I'm seriously considering a used 550i M Sport as a replacement. More power and better economy?

Bring it on I say!

Someone on here was quoted £800 for a 535d - warranty direct charge around £500 and they are known to be cheaper than BMW. Extended warranties from BMW used to be cheapish but they've went up a lot.

More importantly, where were you getting the 6 year warranty notion from?

I see AUC cars for £22k with 15k miles. 5 litre V8 with all the toys!! Seems like a big lump of car for that.
Everything is on the floor at the moment, a VXR8 is an even bigger hitter and can be bought 6 months old for £22k.

A 510BHP V10 BMW M5 can be purchased for sub £30k

A decent low mileage 997 with all the toys for £35k

I need a bigger garage (well that and some money)

Agreed - it also speaks volumes for BMW's ideas on
the running costs of the M5 over the non M cars.

It is not clear to me that more than twice the price
brings more than twice the performance.

Twice the price and some small percentage more performance I
could be lead to believe.

Warranty is 60K OR 3 years, whichever is soonest.

I think the debate between m cars and m sport models has been covered off some times before. I dont think you can compare the two - its not just about straight line speed.

Also i beg to differ RE: warranties - i would predict circa £800 for an 550i.

DONT fall into the trap of thinking its 80% of an M5 for a fraction of the cost. I made just that mistake at with the e39 540 instead of e39 M5. They are chalk and cheese and I only kept the 540 for 3 months before getting an e60 m5.

DO buy the 550 for its own merits and if you have this state of mind you will love it.

which is why he's stated in almost every post he's pay the 600 a year to renew. After 60k it gets steep. Keep up.

Where exactly did he say he will pay the 600 a year to renew - none in this thread.

His post at the top of this page said 6 years warranty left - i was querying that. Keep up.

You're joking right? He mentions cheap warranty 7 times in 7 different posts. He calls it 600 and 500.

He doesnt mention paying it and at the top of this page he states "13,000 miles and six years of warranty left!" when referring to the car and the price of it. I was asking him for clarification on that.
