E92 M3, destined for failure?
Discussion
Here's the strange thing, i just really WANT an E46 M3 CSL, in almost exactly the same way that i'm really not fussed about the E92 M3!
No logical reasoning behind it, but somehow, as a drivers car, the CSL stands out, and "feels" special, whereas the E92, notwithstanding the fact it's an awesome car, just feels a bit too main stream!.
So, currently £30k for a good CSL, vs £40k for a cheap E92, easy call, get the CSL
But if you were given one of those cars, but only one, which one would you take home, more difficult, but probably still the CSL.
Does that make the E92 a "failure" er, not sure....... sorry, thats exactly no help in moving this thread to reach a conclusion, but i don't care 'cause i'm off to the classifieds to stare at a few more CSL's !!lol

I think they had planned a CSL version of the e92, but i'd say market conditions might have shelved that.No logical reasoning behind it, but somehow, as a drivers car, the CSL stands out, and "feels" special, whereas the E92, notwithstanding the fact it's an awesome car, just feels a bit too main stream!.

Jeez, there's some wkers on here Will your bumchums be along in a minute to agree with you?
Do feel free to leave if you don't like the company. Also if you do stay please try not to simply post crude abuse it does rather mark one out as a bit of a pleb. Now there's a good chap.
I think the M3 buyer has also changed, because of it's fairly high new value I think it attracts more professional older people than maybe some of the earlier cheaper models (depreciation aside) I think BMW got this absolutely spot on when they designed the E92 M3, it's no CSL but i whafted back from Silverstone today in total comfort and immersion in what a great all round package the M3 is, some days I wish it was a 997 GT3 but in the main I can't think of a better car for my daily grind, far better than the E46 which was better than the E36 and so on, as far as I am concerned it's a roaring success
I think you're spot on with the M3. I picked up a nearly new E92 earlier this year but nostalgia over my 2005 997 C2S that I parted with when the family came along led me down the road of wanting a Gen2 997 a couple of months ago. Borrowing a C2S PDK for 24 hours made me realise just how good the current M3 is. It's screwed together properly, it's a far more comfortable and compliant ride (in comfort setting) than the porka and also than my wife's 335d, and it has a proper boot and 4 'real' seats. But set the M button up right and it's transformed when you want to play.
That's why my money went on a new DCT E92 M3. And the credit crunch means that it's waiting for me to collect this weekend, less than 4 weeks after placing a factory order. Moreover, it means that there are still relatively few current M3s on the roads.
Best car I've ever owned.

Cast your minds back to the early nineties, and the release of the E36 M3, a more modern and revolutionary design and change of direction regarding the marketing of the m3 compared to the hailed E30 homologation special race bred M3. It wasnt that welcome was it.
I think the E36 M3 was under rated, fabulous engine, incredible what it achieved, in terms of BMEP numbers and fuel economy. (I have one as an ornament I bought from cooks Ferry in my garage!).In the vehicle however- the E30 M3 was always lamented when people drove the E36 M3.
I appreciate what you say when you say ' it wasnt welcome was it?'- but commercially it was a success. And it's releasing this kind of car, during a recession we talked about.

Had an E46 M3(smg) then the CSL and now an E92(manual)...............favourite the E92 M by miles - END OFF
can you sum up what you liked best / worst about the CSL & E92???I've been looking at getting a CSL for a while now, but i'm hanging on a bit to see where their values go! (i think it's more clear cut with the E92 in terms of value, which being a newer car, is only gonna go down in value, whereas the CSL with it's "early classic" status i think will be more volatile in value?)
I have only driven the saloon E93 M3 on a track but it blew me away. Having had a 987 Boxster before and wanting a 997S it completely changed what I wanted for my next car.
Unfortunately the same economic conditions that are now making the M3 a bargain, or closer to the price that BMW should have released it for, have meant that I have had to tighten my belt and stick with my old E36 323.
Oh well at least I don't have to worry about leaving it out on the street at night and if the E93 gets down to £25k next year, maybe but don't tell the wife.
There are a lot of bargains to be had out there at the mo' with very low mileage. Look at the Audi RS4, I have seen barely over a year old ones for £35K.

Been out for a play in my E92 M again today, nowhere special just driving;) something i never did in the 335d,fantastic as it was its just not an M car, these bloody things dont even get to boogie untill 6.5-7000 Revs and it takes some to hold it there and let it go further !! but thats how you drive an M car.Like you stole it to get the best out of it,with the cost of fuel tax etc i do sometimes wonder if its worth it,but then i start it and it all makes sense 335d great car but no fun,E46M great car just feeling a little dated,E92 M the absolute dogs and even convinced 'er indoors that it can be a nice comfortable cruiser aswell ALL IMHO of course and CSL - I dont know, been in a couple but never owned one so couldn't comment;)
