That's the funniest thing I've read all week.
I nearly had a little accident in my trousers laughing so much.

The name of this website is "PistonHeads.com - Speed Matters" and
you want to tell us about about what happens when you set the cruise
control at 65 mph on your V8 155 mph five series ?

I am not entirely sure you are on the appropriate website.
Glad you enjoyed it.

You are quite correct though, I AM on the wrong website. I sold my Beemer and bought a Volvo diesel estate, how sad is that? Somehow, though, I remain drawn to this forum, its just much more interesting than anywhere else, and tells me that perhaps I really am a BMW man at heart.

SO, I'm now looking to shorten my commute so that I can sell the damn Volvo ASAP and get something more interesting again. By coincidence perhaps, I was thinking of a 540i manual estate.

The key here is also manual versus auto.
I'd anticipate a manual to be around 10% more fuel efficient.

I'd imagine welwynnick's figures to be entirely accurate.

540 manual every day of the week !

Chucking fuel on the fire - I recently achieved 37.6MPG (according to the OBC, which is about right to within 0.1mpg or so) on a lazy (no more than 80MPH, wasn't in a particular hurry) cruise down to Bristol and back in my 528i. That's about 500 miles of motorway and 20-30 miles of stop-start urban driving.

Now that I can believe as our 528 manual is capable of similar figures, not that I make the most of it mind.

DCB (again rolleyes):

25 mpg in Germany, on 100 Oktane, cruising at anything up to 150 mph.
As I've indicated, 130 mph is a comfortable cruise speed.

1) Is anybody else seriously, constantly and regularly doing those sort of 'claimed' speed figures?

2) Is the OP seriously gonna do those sort of 'claimed' speed figures?

3) Does anybody else think those sort of 'claimed' constant speed figures are in any way realistic, feasible or responisble in the UK?....And if not can the see the point in the contention?

Whether or not the slogan of the website is "Speed Matters" or not...Where are any of us going to "cruise" at 130mph in the UK?

For God-sakes...stop being so stupid!

If the OP can afford a 530i...he can certainly afford a 540i as well....period! Stop being such a plonker!

I've averaged over 130mph for several Autobahn tankfuls in my B10 V8, not bettered 20mpg whilst doing so though. smile

Hi Guys,
went to have a look at this car on friday and found this thread yesterday. Put a deposit on the car today, pick up in a few days. Pleasantly impressed to find the economy so good. The car is immaculate, so much for the money I couldn't in all fairness turn away and price came down a bit. Interior doesn't look so good in the photos but in real life it is stunning and tasteful. Engine bay and underside is immaculate, could eat your dinner off it. Was stunned by how quiet the car is, I expected a big V8 burble, but it's silent!! I also thought is was going to be a lot quicker than it was but that's probably being unfair considering what I drove to the garage in.
It's going to me my every day car as my main cars have been supra's for the last 4 years (big hp roller bearing turbo cars).
Talk about fuel consumption... 30mpg is a god send! out Transporters barely do that and the supra did 90 miles on 80 litres at marham, that's nearly a litre a mile!
Looking forward to owning my first BMW.

Only just spotted your reply. Glad you're enjoying the car. I just decdided against the whole touring thing partly because of the grief I was getting from my friends calling me an old man.
