I'm still in the market for the new shape X5 for the Mrs. I've driven a 4.8 SE model and liked it. However got a potential deal on a 4.8 M-sport (sub 6 month old car at a cracking price). The car is some miles from me and I'd have to buy it unseen since don't have the time to travel to see it (not a problem with an approved used BMW). The only thing that is potentially bothering me is the ride quality might be very different to the SE I've driven. Car needs to be a comfortable cruiser as a priority. The M-sport has different suspension to the SE and the one I'm looking at has 21" alloys on it. Does anyone own a new shape X5 M-sport? If so what's the ride like? Anyone driven both the SE and the M-sport care to comment.

Many thanks for all replies and comments.

Best to try one locally if you can, people idea of ride comfort differs massively.

I think that the M Sport ride is fine and enjoyable, even on the 20's and 21" alloys, however I have had customers protest at the harshness......

You need to find out for yourself is all I can suggest, seeing as we aren't talking lose change you don't want to be disappointed biggrin

Hi

Sorry I cant help with your question however Id be glad if you could share your experience as Im also looking to buy an X5 or Q7

What kind of a deal have you negotiated?
More specifically are you paying the AUC asking price or did the sticker ticket tumble with a little negotiation?

I have found both Audi and BMW dealers to be incredibly bullish with their s/h prices

This despite Audi having a yard full of Q7's they cant shift and BMW telling me that they have been ordered by group HQ to not take any more X5's of any vintage but especially recent ones as PX's as they cant move them on

Cheers - email me if youd rather not post

Many thanks in advance smile

No problem. Not finalised a price as yet - early stages. The car is only a few months old and is well below it's original new cost - hence my comment on the price. I have been looking at these for a few weeks and have found BMW dealers very unwilling to discount them very far i.e. you can get the usual discount from the sticker price but the price doesn't tumble if you start making low offers. They say that there is still demand for these cars despite current conditions - there is some support for this since I've seen cars (even 4.8 V8s) come onto the approved used web site for sale and then disappear off a few days later. I share your experience that they are very aggressive in pricing part ex (one dealer bid £7k on our current X5!).

Hope this helps.

Please dont buy an SE without the dynamic pack - its pretty much essential as its a big reason why the x5 handles more like a car than a 4x4.

IF the car you drove had it, then you have driven an x5 with the m sports suspension.

I had an e70 x5, SE, dynamic pack and 20's and the ride was terrific.

I don't have an X5, but I am guessing that the X6 may be similar. My X6 35d is on 20 inch wheels with run flats (wider at the back than the front). It has dynamic drive or whatever the optional handling/suspension is called plus self levelling etc.

The ride is hard and it does crash more over bumps than I expected. I came out of a 530d SE on only small 16 inch alloys. I still have the 530d and it is a significantly better ride.

The X6 is a great car and the handling on normal roads is first class for such a lump. The ride over bumps is more intrusive than I thought it would be. In all honesty, it is the one aspect of the car that I find a bit of a let down.

In all other respects - great car and I imagine that the X5 will be similar (except you wont be hated by quite as many people and your car will be more practical, seat 5 or 7, will be less ugly than the X6 etc etc!!!).

Good luck
