16-25mpg for the petrol
20-30mpg for the diesel
The V8 will be about 1-2mpg behind the 3.0i and around 50% cheaper to buy, plus you have LPG conversins from Prins now that are superb, so will be the equivilent of 28-40mpg for around £2k installed.
That is the direction I would go.
where are you finding v8s at half the price of 3.0i's?20-30mpg for the diesel

On Autotrader from traders for 2003 cars....
4.4i £10000 - £14000
4.6is £11995 - £18250
3.0i £8995 - £15995
Interestingly...
3.0d £12995 - £18995
ie, there would be a perception that the diesels are much more expensive year for year than say the v8's, but its price band is much the same as the 4.6i...

I picked up a 4.4 "53" plate on the weekend.
Almost every extra bar sun roof, and its fricken great. Paid just over 11k.
Managed to get around 22 mpg from Bristol to Bournemouth, and thats pretty good imho, as its country roads.
If you don't do huge miles, the price you save on the purchase price, more than saves on the mpg different with the diesel.

Yup, even doing 6K a year and paying just 3K less than a diesel one, it will take about 12 years to recoup the difference according to...Almost every extra bar sun roof, and its fricken great. Paid just over 11k.

I am surpised the mpg is so low for the 4.4 in the X5. I've got the 4.4 in my 7series and I can easily get 32 on a motorway run and 15-18 around town.
What's the weight difference. My 540i Touring has averaged 24.7 over the last 30k miles. I would guess that the 5 is lighter than the 7 and the X is heavier.I'm just buying a 4.6 X5 so will be interesting to see what that does as an average. I'm hoping 21 but that might be wishful thinking especially in the early days

IS THE SPORTS MODE THE M/S +- . in the hand book it says for max performance use kick down or when in possition D move lever left and tap forwards or backwords as req. didnt really understand.
If its anything like my 540, then you move it over to the left - the display will change from "D" to "D S". Then after that you can punch it up and down for manual gears. In my 540, in D it will pull away in 2nd - whereas in Sport (D S) it pulls away in 1st.
