are you talking about the latest x5?

if so diesel will get you mid twenties, may 28 at a push, petrol will see early 20's 25 at a push.

fairly similar for the previous shape.

16-25mpg for the petrol

20-30mpg for the diesel

The V8 will be about 1-2mpg behind the 3.0i and around 50% cheaper to buy, plus you have LPG conversins from Prins now that are superb, so will be the equivilent of 28-40mpg for around £2k installed.

That is the direction I would go.

where are you finding v8s at half the price of 3.0i's?

On Autotrader from traders for 2003 cars....

4.4i £10000 - £14000
4.6is £11995 - £18250
3.0i £8995 - £15995

Interestingly...

3.0d £12995 - £18995

ie, there would be a perception that the diesels are much more expensive year for year than say the v8's, but its price band is much the same as the 4.6i...

Make some offers on the V8's, they are going for peanuts!

I know someone who has an 04 X5 3.0 diesel and he says he struggles to get above 22mpg in town. On the motorway it's around 35mpg and on a town-to-town run its around 30mpg.

I picked up a 4.4 "53" plate on the weekend.

Almost every extra bar sun roof, and its fricken great. Paid just over 11k.

Managed to get around 22 mpg from Bristol to Bournemouth, and thats pretty good imho, as its country roads.

If you don't do huge miles, the price you save on the purchase price, more than saves on the mpg different with the diesel.

I am surpised the mpg is so low for the 4.4 in the X5. I've got the 4.4 in my 7series and I can easily get 32 on a motorway run and 15-18 around town.

Yup, even doing 6K a year and paying just 3K less than a diesel one, it will take about 12 years to recoup the difference according to...

http://www.mez.co.uk/derv.html

though that doesnt take into account differences in resale values.

Not sure what you mean? Pull out to pass someone and accelerate hard and it will kick down.

Personally, if i know i am on a stretch of road that i can push on on i will use sport mode.

Simple as that.

What's the weight difference. My 540i Touring has averaged 24.7 over the last 30k miles. I would guess that the 5 is lighter than the 7 and the X is heavier.

I'm just buying a 4.6 X5 so will be interesting to see what that does as an average. I'm hoping 21 but that might be wishful thinking especially in the early days drivingbiglaugh

If its anything like my 540, then you move it over to the left - the display will change from "D" to "D S". Then after that you can punch it up and down for manual gears.
In my 540, in D it will pull away in 2nd - whereas in Sport (D S) it pulls away in 1st.

There's a guy on ebay who advertises a repair service with money back if it doesn't work. I think it's about £150 for the repair. The downside is you have to take out the binnacle and send it to him.

Bit difficult driving around with a hole full of wires where your instrument panel used to beeek

£80 for instrument cluster repair, I took the car to him, about 1 hour to complete, full before and after test, good guy. More recommendations
