What's a realistic discount?
Discussion
Ok - getting close now to buying a 335i convertible or 330i convertible (have another post out at the moment). I'm testing two cars back to back this weekend and assuming all goes well then will prob go for one of them. Question is this: what is a realistic discount to get off the screen price at the moment? I'm not out to completely stiff the dealer over, but want to get a fair price.
The 335i is up at £37k and the 330i is at £35k. Both cars are M Sport models, 08 plate, well specc'd and under 10k miles on the clock.
I was hoping to get £2k off either car. Is that expecting too much, or not enough?!?

I've heard my local main dealer have just taken a 16K loss on a used low mile 6 series. I'm also told that they'll consider 30-40% off (for cash purchases) on the undesirable models just to get shot of the things.
They have a line of E60s at the moment. None more than three years old and no more than 35K on the clock. Take your pick from 4 x 525D SE with various differing options - all of them around the £15K mark.... before haggling.

If this is the stealers in Bromley then I strongly suggest buying elsewhere. They are some of the rudest and most ignorant BMW "representatives" i have ever come across.
Obviously can't name names, but Jephen Stames might be a helpful anagram...
I have never bought from them, but have been surprised each time I have been there by incomplete and incompetent servicing work being done. I don't even use them for buying parts anymore as they can't even get that right.
Shame really as it's pretty much at the end of my road!!

True...! Thinking of going in £2k - £3k under. Will see if I get kicked out of the place or not..
Are you serious? £2-3k on a £35-37k car i.e. a max discount of 8.5% or a min of 5.4%....Being totally serious here you need to go in with an offer of at least £8k under the screen price infact start at asking for £10k. Then leave them with your offer for a week or two.
Not Bromley, but thanks for the tip. You are very close though - head past the big Tesco and on towards Bexley a bit . I've always had a good experience from the one I am referring to and this would be the second car I've bought from them. Funny you mention Bromley - my Dad had a 325i from them and wasn't too impressed with the Service side...
Welshbeef - I think you have given me the encourgement I needed! Not sure I would go in £10k under as they sold a similar spec car (on an 07 plate admittedly) for £29k a couple of weeks ago. It's on that basis I'm not sure having the 08 plate is worth an extra £6k at £35k. I suppose no harm going in at £29k and see what happens though. Not exactly a rare car so there'll be plenty of choice.

Hell yeah - go in 33% under screen price and see what happens
Your credibility as a prospective customer goes down the pan?I'm more thinking make a realistic offer so the guy doesn't think I am trying to shaft him (in my own line of business we play a middle man and of course both sides try squeezing us, but if we think both sides are playing pretty fair then a sensible deal can work). So I guess I'm taking that kind of approach with me - make a sensible offer and hope to meet somewhere we both like.
Having said all that, this is probably why I don't sell cars for a living...! I'm now prepared to be roasted!
