Don't be soft, you are not a charity! You want a car, they want to sell you a car, make an offer and go from there. If the reaction is not so good then explain your offer and swiftly re-haggle to get things going in the right direction. What have you got to lose, as you say it's not a particularly scarce car?

My 335i was up at £38k and we ended up doing a deal at £33k in the end, this was last Spring before things went tits up.

So I would go in at close to £30k to start with and don't pay more than £33k whatever you do, you will still loose £10k over 12 months at £33k.

biggrin Fair point! I've just had a look on BMW AUC and there are 4 pages of the car with the spec etc. I like! So may be more room for negotiation than I thought...!
Make it clear to them that their car isnt the cheapest out there and if you cant work out a deal with them you dont have any issues travelling to buy the right car at the right price.

Now I take it at £37k the M-Sport is auto and has nav professioanal??

May be worth noting that the new iDrive is out from sept built cars, and the gearbox is now the stunning DCT box.

So you really do want to be getting that for around £30k.

Coast to coast2coastcars.com will do you a brand new one with the new iDrive and DCT for under £40k.

Hell yeah - go in 33% under screen price and see what happens
Your credibility as a prospective customer goes down the pan?
But if it works you have saved yourself a fortune - say a nice 2 week stay in a top end 5 star hotel with the Mrs.
You would be taken by the arm and steered towards the door. Then you'll have to find another BMW dealership to buy a car from.
From what I'm hearing, that's unlikely in the current climate - certainly at my local dealers, it appears any customer is a good customer.

I've had reason to visit my local lot five times in the last three weeks - service booking, service drop off, service pick-up ordering parts, collecting parts. Every single time, it's been like a ghost town in there. Collecting parts today and, literally, I was the only customer on the whole site on at least two of those visits.

As for needing somewhere else to buy your BMW, well, the South East isn't exactly short of BMW Main Dealers is it?

Interesting re the new DCT box, and especially interesting that coast2coast (never heard of them before) can get a new one at just under £40k! Will check them out, as it will obviously help in negotiation etc..

At auction this week:

Porsche 911 997 3.8 CS coupe Tip, sat, 2005/55, 17k miles £35,900s

Not a vert I know but they come up as well. If I were going to go shopping with that cash for a car I'd be heading to a BCA prestige auction.

M3's are now changing hands in the trade for sub £30k so I was told today, not convertibles mind you.

You need to be very careful buying a car like that at the moment. My 335i was £42 list, it was up for £38k and I got it for £33k, sold it 6 months later for £32k, now I know he had trouble selling it 6 months later still and was tempted to buy it back again when I saw it at a main dealer for £23k, the car was now nearly 18 months old, so I guess trade price on it would have been £19k??

Didn't you say it was only going to be a car for 12 months max??

Expect to get bids of £20k in 12 months time, £24k private.

Scary resding really. I'd be keeping for 2 yrs, so I guess most of the hit would happen in first year... Not sure I'd be too comfortable buying at auction - no come back at all if anything goes wrong.. !!

But if you are buying a year old car you have two years warranty, so no problem at all.

Before an auction you can get a list of the cars going through, if there are 2 or 3 that look like they could be ideal you can run an hpi on them before you go.

Then go and bid!

I understand not wanting to buy one that is out of warranty, but at a year old it could be worth a bash.

Cars are loosing around 40-45% in year one now, and then another 10-15% over years 2 and 3, problem you have is the demos of cabs are still few and far between, it was the same with teh coupes 6 months or so ago, not far off new price for a 6 month old sub 10k mile car, but look at them now there are a few about, you can get £40k coupes for £20k or thereabouts.

You need to be careful at the moment, the depreciation curve is a bloody steep one, once the 'new model' novelty wears off the cab will fall like a stone, look at E46 M3 cab prices, they are now cheaper than the coupes for the same age/mileage/spec car.

The Auction sites are well worth a visit - as other people have stated as your looking at a max year old car you still have 2 years BMW warranty on the vehicle, or if your not comfortable in going to an Auction why not pay someone say £300 r so to go to the auction for you and buy the correct car win win.

OP, Im amazed at the £20k examples, really makes you think why private individuals with 6 year old 330d's and still trying to get £12k for them when 15month old examples are at BMW AUC £17k...

If this is the stealers in Bromley then I strongly suggest buying elsewhere. They are some of the rudest and most ignorant BMW "representatives" i have ever come across.

Obviously can't name names, but Jephen Stames might be a helpful anagram...

I have never bought from them, but have been surprised each time I have been there by incomplete and incompetent servicing work being done. I don't even use them for buying parts anymore as they can't even get that right.
+1

Waiting 50 minutes for my keys when collecting my car from a service was enough to put me off them.

Interesting you say that! I picked my wife's 3-series up from a service there a ew months back. Took 20 minutes of waiting as they needed to move a load of cras before they could get hers out - and they couldn't find the keys! Sounds like an ongoing problem for them. To be fair the dealer at Ruxley roundabout has always been very good in my experience - which is why I'll be going there even though it's in the opposite direction to my office and further away...

Def go for a silly offer first. How I wish I was buying now as I would love to see those stealers squeal.
