Hello to everyone on this forum! One very close friend of mine, is seriously considering buying a Bmw E46 320 Cabrio, year 2001, with 90k miles on the clock! He asked for my opinion, and I am asking for yours!

1) Reliability: Is the E46 engine generally reliable? It's the one with the 170hp, right? Are 90k miles considered too much for this engine, or it can go on forever with proper maintenance? I'm asking because he's really afraid because of the high number of miles on the engine.

2) Fun to drive: Is the 320 cabrio fun to drive? Can you drift with it, or is it just too heavy?

3) Maintenance: What can he expect to pay, for average maintenance per year?

Thank you in advance, and congrats for the beautiful cars I saw on this forum!!

Hi,i recentley owned a e46 330 convertible 70k on a 2001,
reliabilty wise i didn't have any problems i checked the oil and water regulary and serviced it when needed that was about it.

The 330 has the same running costs as a 320 but alot more power, hence it is alot more fun to drive, and they seem to be selling very cheap at the moment maybe your mate should think about a 330 instead.

I maintained mine at a BMW specialist which cut the costs by over 60%.

If well taken care of 90k miles is not a problem, so buy on condition and history.

As for power, I heard the 320 is a little down on power even compared to the 318. Yes the 320 has more bhp but also heavier making the 318 better apparently from what I have been told.

If he wants a 6 pot I'd say the 325 is the best compromise

Good luck

The E46 is prone to steering pump failure, mine went and it cost £600 to replace. I was in France at time and had no choice.
