just to clarify i am not porsche biased,

i intended to buy and therefore drove a M5 when i bought my 997

it did not drive anywhere near as well as the manual 135i I had to part ex - thats what i would reccomend as the current drivers bm

Ok, that's sets the bar perfectly. Thanks laughjester

OP - Buy a one series!!! The M5/M6 is too ugly, impractical and far too slow round the twisties...

M3? Nah, get a 135i... it's the next CSL...

Benno, you should have tried a Cayman S fella... they are SOOO much better a driver's car than the 997... rolleyes

1. - if you enjoy full control of heel and toe then ANY "robot" box is a poor substitute.
2. - Well... suppose have to concede on that one as it does seem as though everyone is going that way now. I've yet to hear any professional drivers that have spent any time with the SMG boxes call foul and say it's complete tosh though. smile

Think the last statement is a bit strong really - I enjoy a good drivers car and have had some good one's... I find the SMG box in the M6 much better than the manual Renault gearbox I had in the Esprit Sport 350 for example biggrin

I'd say the M5/M6 is a great drivers car but the gearbox is something you'll either get on with and like... or not... I do agree that they should have offered a manual though, silly not to do so.

Don't dismiss it the 135i it is a great drivers car, ditto the old V8 M5. I would probably put it on a level pegging with the CSL (I owned one) but well above the curent M5 / M6 for driving fun as it has a manual box and a more agile nature.

Yes, have driven a cayman but no rear seats for the kids and not as quick as a 997.

Bennno, I've got a huge amount of time for your opinions but this time, I'm afraid ownership bias is clouding matters.

To say the M6 is all about bhp is not a comment I'd expect from your eminent self, seriously nor, tbh, from many other PHers with fair experience themselves.

The other comments you make about weight and handling are just ridiculous and the schoolboy reliance on the TG IOM incident? Well, raised eyebrows would be putting it mildly...

The M6 is one of the best handling cars I've ever used and I am flabbergasted by your (of all peoples') views.

Perhaps I just have odd tastes, as the M6 should tick all my boxes.

Perhaps the M5 I drove wasn't a good example, it just felt baggy and the box dimwitted.Overall it didn't feel as alive or quick as I expected 507bhp to.

Odd as I do like BM's and especially like the 6L VXR Monaro's so the M5 / M6 should be my sort of car.
