E36 caliper upgrade?

I've heard that 8-series front calipers can be used on an E36 M3. Is this true and does it provide a worthwhile upgrade? Any issues with fitting and are all 8-series calipers the same? Would it require 8-series disc too?

I know you use the 840 4 pot brembos, which weren't fitted to every 840. The disc might have been an e46 m3 one.
From what i gather, the caliper to disc are slightly offset this way by a couple of mm, but the sliding takes up the slack
