No need to debate if the answers are correct. This is just a topical poll to see where popular PH opinion lies.
You need some debate or the poll will drop off the page and no-one will see it. I reckon that BMW make the best diesels out there, but I'd still ALWAYS take the petrol, thanks.
I see your point!
I thought I was a true petrolhead, but I have been converted to the autotragic diseasal way.
I have an e90 320d until my own 530d is ready to collect. I can't find anything wrong with it. There's a little clatter when cold at idle. It's not perfectly smooth. But it is quick, refined and economical.
So I'm starting to believe that petrol is the ultimate for performance, while diesel is more a distance GT.
Should we start a panto style "oh no it isn't", "oh yes it is" debate to keep this thread on the first page for the forum?

But then you are buying on which is cheaper not which one you like, and that never really ends up being the cheap option.
My wife likes Astons..... oh dear sounds expensive!Price is a factor, but there's more to it than that. I like the effortless way diesels waft along and the nice instant turbo grunt from low rpm. Admittedly, I'll miss the superior fun and performance to be had from thrashing a petrol on a good twisty road when the sun's shining with the right music coming from the stereo. These days, most of my motoring is the former cruising rather than the latter utopia.
Oh god, the diesel vs petrol debate again. It's horses for courses and the 'right' engine will depend on what the car's needed for and there's no one size fits all answer.
Most PHers would always go petrol, as you'll never get the same reward from a diesel as you will from any 6, 8, or 10 cylinder petrol engine from BMW. Above 5,000 revs my V8 M3 is just bloody awesome, as has every other petrol engined bmw I've owned when pushing on (never had a 4 cylinder one mind).
BUT, the family wagon is a diesel. When it came down to it, the 335d (no, not a mapped one) was a better all round bet for a family estate than a 335i. Effortless motorway cruising at barely more than tickover, easy and relaxed acceleration, and a perfect match for an autobox.
Of course, if it was my only car I probably would have had to go for the petrol though. And there are times when I'm in the 335d - local back roads for example - that I wish it was a 335i.

We've a 535d which i use for the motorway miles, and as family transport, and we've a 3.0Si Coupe that the wife drives.
untill about 3 wweks ago i was a die hard petrol man, wouldnt even talk of a diesel, but tested the 530d just to see what the fuss was about, its a world away from the oil burners of old, iv an jag xk8 and it is still better, but the 530d's still well good enough to replace it, i will say u do need a decent size one though, just try 1 and ull see where im comming from, defo gonna get 1

It's a stupid poll, because most people have not experienced both.
So all it shows is what people 'believe' whether right or wrong.
And of course, if it was showing the inverse response, then it would be seen as 'definitive' by the petrol heads....So all it shows is what people 'believe' whether right or wrong.

At least some of the 4 pot BMWs have a grin inducing power band - the 318iS may have lacked a bit in power, but the way it pulled once you had 4k on the clock was totally unexpected.Doubt I'll be able to go for a BMW diesel for a while, but doubt I'd have any problems driving around in a 325tds.

B-t-b - take it back! TAKE IT BACK! You can't have Porsches and then like diesels.
Don't you feel slightly like a fraud?

Actually that seems a great ad for how much better heavy oil burners have become in recent years.

Having had a succession of reasonably high performance cars (including a V8 ) I don't miss any of them. The diesel is way fast enough, quiet, comfortable, can be loaded with a ton of crap and still return decent mpg.
One day I'll get another 911 or Aston Martin or something similar but currently it simply ticks all the boxes.

The poll is completely loaded though.
LOL! How is it loaded? The options cover the complete spread of opinion and the petrol options come first.Or is it a case of "I don't like the answer so the question must be wrong".
But the poll seemed a bit loaded to me, maybe it is the way it is worded, reading it again I guess it covers things.
I have no opinion, show me the results only.:
The worst thing ever, I'll always buy petrol:
Bad performance, bad costs:
Bad performance, good costs:
Good performance, bad costs:
Good performance, good costs:
The best thing ever, I'd always pick diesel:
I think that it could have been better if it were..
I prefer the diesel because it is cheaper.
I prefer the diesel but know it is no cheaper.
I prefer the diesel even though it is now more expensive than petrol.

I just think that the questions are a bit loaded, you can never say that the diesels have poor performance, and you can't say they are expensive to run, but the way the questions are worded meant I couldn't answer the poll.
