I just think that the questions are a bit loaded, you can never say that the diesels have poor performance, and you can't say they are expensive to run, but the way the questions are worded meant I couldn't answer the poll.

So, good performance, good running costs would be your answer?

FWIW

I have owned the following BMWs:

E46 330D saloon manual 184bhp / E46 330D touring manual 184bhp / E46 325i touring manual 193bhp
E91 320D touring manual 163bhp / E46 M3 manual

Current

E60 520d saloon auto 177bhp
E91 320i touring manual (no idea how many horses)

My advice would be:

always buy a 6 cylinder
diesel for miles
petrol for smiles

I don't think the performance is poor.
I don't think they are expensive to run, but I don't think the running costs for a diesel are that good either, any more.

Which is my point, a loaded poll.

There are a limited number of choices for a poll. Pick the one that most closely resembles your opinion. It's not loaded, it's just not as granular as you'd like.

It's a stupid poll, because most people have not experienced both.

So all it shows is what people 'believe' whether right or wrong.
Who says its stupid?

I've owned both a petrol and diesel BMW and within my family we've had/have 4 diesel and 4 petrol BMWs within the last 10yrs. Pretty good grounds for comparison I'd have said.

So have i.

But what gizlaroc means is that its a stupid poll because it shows diesels in a good light - some petrol drivers just comprehend that.

In what way aren't the diesel running costs good? What are you comparing against? The wife's 335d has c.30% better average mpg than the 335i that we used to run, costs at least a couple of hundred quid a year less to tax, and costs the same to service. A current average of 38mpg for a 286bhp / 428lb ft motor is pretty good I think.

The fact that diesel probably cost 15p more than petrol these days, and that isn't going to change. Why do people forget that when doing their sums?

38mpg for 286bhp is not to be scoffed at though. That's if you can get over it sounding like tractor smile

A 335i auto averages 30.7
A 335d auto averages 42.2

Where i live diesel costs 13p more than unleaded.

If a 335d averages 38mpg in the real world, then a 335i will average 27mpg.

According to http://www.mez.co.uk/derv.html this translates to the equivalent of a diesel doing 30.7mpg, so the 335d is still significantly more economical.

I'm going the BMW diesel route (123d M-Sport on order). There's no comparison for me - 20mpg in the ST @ 90ppl (Tesco 99) and 50mpg in the 123d @ 99ppl.

Doing 25k a year, it's a no-brainer.

330i gives me around 32mpg (new 272bhp version) running around, and when I had it over 2 days and 500 miles it returned 38 mpg.

Now I have only had a 335d touring for a day, went from Norwich to Solihull in it and it returned........38mpg.

The 335i doing the same run consistently returned 33mpg doing that same run, even when I wasn't out travelling it would be above 25mpg, that is when the 335d would be down to 32mpg.

I would take the 330i over any other non-M 3 series, the combination of engine, sound, performance and economy is just incredible, and it gives the same sort of power as the 335d and costs less to fuel with current prices.

So as I say, I don't think the performance is bad, I don't think they are expensive to run but I do think there are better options now.
