Take it to a Transmission specialist.

Apparently changing it does more bad than good.
I think that if the wrong oil is used or the correct level not met then you can quickly find that the box is damaged

On both occasions I have changed the fluid myself on my 740 it took a couple of days of checking before I was confident that the level was spot on

I guess a proper automatic transmission specialist will know exactly what he's doing so I reckon the risk is lower than if you got an independent or main dealer to do it...

Just pinged a ZF service centre asking if you should change the oil at high miles and they said yes.
Here's the spare parts manual which details the filling procedure:

I reckon I'm going to definitely get the local auto specialist to give it an inspection, fluid change, new filter and diagnostics (it's what they do, day-in, day-out, so I expect that if there are risks they will know how to minimise them).

They're called Automotive Automatics, based in Edinburgh. Run by a (presumably) husband/wife team Jim & Janet Makin (I have only spoken to Janet on the phone but she seemed very clued up (a lot more than I am anyway - not difficult)). Anyone know/used them?
