RE: BMW One Series
Discussion
What you need to remember is all the people who think BMW is middle class & good taste will rush out and trade in their Golf TDi's for it...
Yes the same people that try to tell you that the Golf TDi is really fast & tells tales of beating boxsters off the line
Only joking round, please dont bombard me with slur's

Deffinatly Mazda 3 meets 147 meets new Astra, main problem is it will start off dearer than the top of the range of all it's practical competition. It may be stonking to drive but not an Impreza rival , Audi may as well pack it's bags with the A3 as this will out sell it 4 to 1 . The styling has it's moments and will instantly say BMW in a year or two, not sure about the interior, looks a bit grey and brittle , but it may be just the air-brushed look of the photo . I think the biggest question mark will be practicality and space efficiency, RWD needn't be bad in a small car the Impreza is very roomy , and some FWD offerings the 147 being a prime candidate are not too great in the boot space dept. Be honest it may not be prety but in a years time if it appears on your company car list along with the A3 and Golf you will choose it ...Now if only Jag would make that superb looking RD6 (?)thingy... no contest !!

Manages to make the 3-Series Compact look good in comparison!
ANd I allready complained about that ugly 3-Series-Compact with its Modern-(Styles)-Rearlight.
The 6 Series was great.
The 4 Series doesn't seem to be such a bad idea.
But a BMW 1 & 2 ?
Have the hired the guy that was responsible for the Merc. A-Class, or what?
Previous versions of BMW's have grown on me over time but I have reservations over this. BMW seem intent on cheapening their brand name. Yes it may make their cars more accessible to more people but at what cost? Looks very very ugly and ordinary. Once you also factor in that it will cost nearer £20,000 by the time you give it an acceptable spec it becomes more and more of a joke.
I own an E34 5 series and they have got uglier ever since 1996 imo. Crappy cars like this just devalue their truely magnificent cars (M5) to me. Just as the crappy basic 3 series became the wannabe's XR3i and the X5 has become the footballers wives terrible cliche I guess this will find a home. I however will never buy another BMW as their brand name just doesn't appeal anymore..

Unfortunately, I think that it's you who is missing the point.
The general public (in the UK at least) buy cars primarily for the aesthetics. Before you ask, there is plenty of market research that show this to be the case.
Just look at the 318ti - that was supposed to take on Ford in the budget class. Hardly sold though did it!
No, I have not missed the point.
I am merely pointing out that:
1. This car, love it or hate it, will hold its value better than most other vehicles in its class - which makes it a good bet if, like me, you have to pay for your car out of your own pocket.
2. Everyone said that the Z4 looked bad in pictures, but in the flesh it looks a lot better (but I am biased because I own one!)
3. It has the right badge on it - which for the large majority of people who are looking to purchase a car, will be very happy that they can afford a BMW - you only have to look at the large numbers of A-Class sold to see that the allure of a badge / brand is vital and makes up for a lot of shortcommings (the A-Class is a bad car)
4. I take your point on market research, but as you will know, market research is a fickle tool which can be manipulated any which way - in reality who if asked why they purchased the car they did would say - "it's got a great depreciation curve" or "it has low servicing costs"????
Looks may matter to an extent, but in that case how do you explain the numbers of Ford Sierra's sold? Everyone said it looked like a jellymould back in the early 80's, but it still sold millions.
Nothing to do with looks - everything to do with costs.

And a lack of imagination. My uncle bought a new Sierra because he'd always had Cortinas before that. He's recently bought his 3rd or 4th Mundaneo, following 3 or 4 Sierras.
This 1-series BMW - people will think, from the name, it's the new Metro replacement
You can tell from that sagging side sill that they definately need to turn the heating down in the BMW R&D department!
I've read this entire thread, taken another subjective look at the car and it's still ing hideous. I'm not knocking BMWs as I would love a rear drive hot hatch. I'm even starting to accept the Bangle styled 6 series but what a complete dissapointment this is.
I haven't been so repulsed since the new Micra and even that had a certain laughter appeal. This is just fugly.
