Because I'm such a scepitcalold b'stard, I read the OP's post and thought that he's the guy selling them on flea-bay and was doing a bit of covert free advertising.

The idea of having wires all over the engine bay and in particularly, near the 'turbo' is just plain daft. The idea of going for a tuppence hapeny solution on a E92 330d defies logic too.

However, I want proof that this thing can 'break traction' due to the improvement in torque. I also have a chipped 3.0d BMW (M54) and mine doesn't have the alleged potency you refer to.

Also being a sceptical old b'stard, I also alledge sir that you are in fact the infamous 'Carlos' of the 'chipped 335d' fame, masquerading as amongst us, thinking we haven't rumbled you!!!!!

If he looks like that then am rumbled lol, I assure you that I am infact quite retarded when it comes to cars, and hence I seem to have been ripped off to the tune of £90.00 for a chip that will be shunting a shed load of fuel into me car.

It comes out tonight !

Im not home from work yet and Ive an hours drive to go down the 62 then the 6 !!!

I was over the moon last night with the extra power, and it was a hell of a lot quicker. The chip had 8 settings on it as well, it was only set to the second one as it stated that would suit all cars.

Not to arsed about the £90, am more gutted about the loss of that power frown

Best advice to date,I doubt you'll find a company that has as many positive online testimonials.
Pop on BMW Land,I'm sure you'll find a group mapping session that features e-maps.

Cheers pal, I've spoke to Simon and he's happy to come to manchester and do it for £299 and with the testamonials ive had seen / had from this site I think thats a safe bet to let him sort it.

Just waiting till the engine cools down now and am going out to take this chip off.

Really appreciate the advise, should have registered before purchasing and saved meself a few quid lol

I had my old 330d mapped by Simon a couple of years ago and can't praise him enough. He really knows his stuff, comes to you and charges half of what DMS would charge you for the same job.

I've been idly toying with the idea of getting my e60 530d chipped for a while now -
I have some general worries about it that put me off. Does it decrease the life of the engine? Will it wear other bits out quicker (such as engine and auto transmission components?)
What is the power increase like? I think my motor is pretty quick, are we talking a big noticeable difference?

Yep you'll notice a big difference mate, there's loads of remapped cars around with no problems. It is likely that other parts will wear out quicker when mapped but that's to be expected, just the saem as they would if you drive it hard. The auto box on the E60 will handle far more torque than they make as standard so get it done!

Just my 2p

At least with these digital boxes you KNOW what is being changed.

The rail sensor is probably standard across those cars, so this box is designed to alter the calibration the ECU will see, so it keeps rail pressure near standard around idle for nice driving, then at higher rail pressure where high injection requests are made, bigger ones are made instead.
You might get around 10-15% more fuel that way... nice... ish...

The older linear tuning box adjustments were poor. These new ones *should* be better if done well.

However, £90 is still steep. Probably £5 of electronics in a box all said and done.

Further, for a remap, do you trust the person doing it?
I've seen some really naff stuff in remaps from 'reputable' tuners... so don't think a remap will guarantee anything with more engineering integrity than the device you already fitted to the car!

If I were you, I'd find a home-brew tuner familiar with these cars, and ask them which tuner they advise to use, rather than get recommendations from people who have not much idea either (ie, buying a single remap without trying others doesn't mean that person knows what a good remap is), or relying on the tuner themselves to be honest about their work!

www.ecuconnections.com

I'd ask on there personally!

Yet on the 330Ci tuning thread, Vixpy said not to bother doing anything with the M54B30... yet Simon from eMaps will relieve you of £150-£200 for a boost of 17bhp on an engine that has very little extra to give! Dinan (specialists) say about 4bhp is possible with 97RON tuning (equivalent), ESS (specialists) the same.
Yet eMaps have found another 13bhp on top of them! Wow! eMaps must be AMAZING, or liars, or just not have a clue.

Sorry, but as soon as a tuner sells something that is bks, then I lose all faith in what other stuff they offer. When are they telling the truth, and when are they lying, and when do they just not know?

If they had integrity they wouldn't sell remaps for those cars with an M54B30, but they do on the idea that owners will get another 17bhp!

That is just wrong imo...

If you really want the best for your car, go to a specialist with these engines... someone who doesn't remap everything under the sun from Veyrons to Skoda diesels, is proably someone who makes their living knowing one thing very well, than everything vaguely.

Hate to be so negative but the tuning world is a minefield. Good tuners are often not great tuners, you want to be finding the great tuners with this engine to get good value for money!

Dave, surely we all know power is a function of torque and revs, so it's not beyond the realms of reality to see 15 bhp higher peak, by lifting the rev limiter slightly if the motor can avoid the drop off in torque, what 250-500 rpm difference?

No 'real world' benefit, but still a sort of truth.

I still think the OP has had his original question answered in that he asked on here for opinion and got them. As I stated, I've used Superchips, who've been around a long time, have had warranty work carried out by a dealer with no issues, then had the map replaced f.o.c. by the Superchips agent as part of their guarantee.

I can also categorically state, I have total confidence in their maps delivering safe & significant benefits on a standard car (both advenced turbo diesels admittedly). I would also not bother mapping a modern standard n/a petrol motor, 'cos I pretty much know it's just a few more revs and a more aggressive throttle I'd expect, at the expense of engine longevity.

You've rightly addressed the yin/yan balance of any good thread on PH though wink

I take it you've not re-mapped the Z4 then hehe

BTW, Charlie's a top bloke, so leave him alone!

The torque is well on it's way out on the M54 B30 at higher revs... peak power is at 5900rpm, rev limiter at 6500rpm, and iirc, the ZHP 330Ci (US only I think) ran 6800rpm limiter... BUT, it also had higher speed camshafts...

Here is my corrected plot for @ flywheel power (ignore the actual correction, it's the shape I'm looking at):

As you can see it's kinda worth revving at the very high end, but I think the decline in torque there is a function of cams and breathing, not mapping.
ESS and Dinan raise the limiters but still quote only 4-5bhp gains, while BMW themselves add cams to get another 300rpm and 7bhp!

Superchips do ok work, they write up what they have done nicely on their website and show some decent proof per car with real owners cars! Nothing wrong with that. I wish all tuners did something like that to prove their products, rather than you having to rely on blind faith or go scouring the internet for dynos from users with their remap etc...

Charlie is a great guy from what I hear, but unfortunately not all tuners are great frown

I'm simply pointing out who you would trust in this example (330Ci). The person who made supercharging kits for the car, or comprehensive technical changes to throttle bodies, exhausts and ECU mapping etc, and claimed modestly at 4-5bhp with super unleaded... OR, the person who remaps every car under the sun, and claims 3-4x more power!?

In the OP's case, a good tuning box could possibly be as good as a remap from a crap remapper who simply decalibrate things to avoid the limiters they can't find anyway.
In either case, if they want the best remap, they are best seeking out the real specialists with this engine/car combo, not a generic remapping person, imo smile

So given that this post was now over a year ago, what was the outcome? Did the OP go to a specialist remapper, and if so who? What was the result?

I'm curious as I have a E90 M57 330D which I want to get chipped for around 15% better fuel economy for 99% of the time and 15% more power / torque when I need to get a wiggle on for an overtake.

Who should I use? DMS? Emaps? Superchips? Evolution Chips? Any feedback from Radical Remaps? It looks like they just fit map files from some italian outfit.
