Is the primary motivation for 15% more mpg?

I'd love to see an independent test to show improved mpg of 15%... rather than an 'up to' claim that appears to be meaningless.

Dave, I think 15% more than most peoples average is perhaps within the realms of reality, but not the manufacturers official mpg, which are impossible in the real world of a ph'er.

I was delighted with my superchips maps.

Just in my experience, I've only ever seen more mpg if you drive at the same speed or slower using higher gears...

Not many people can do that (they just drive faster instead, or the same speed at worst). And doing that in the original car would yield good results too. Seemed to me to be all about self-discipline more than anything scratchchin

Would be good to see a really good independent test on this though.

Almost all the maps I saw for my old car, with claims of more mpg, had nothing clever in them at all. The only way you could get more mpg would be to drive at the same speed but accelerate using the improved torque, but even then I'd question if it would yield more overall mpg during those already very steady acceleration phases.

Try get any detailed info about a specific tune from a remapper/tuner and they rarely tell you, usually because they don't actually know hehe

For what it is worth... I question either the plug in or the ECU remap...

For years I had been using Tunit boxes plugged into the fuel rail on various 30d BMW's (3 series and 5 series with the newest being the E60).
They felt much quicker and responsive and therefore I loved them.

I then swapped to a 2011 E71 X6 40d with 306bhp. I discovered that I couldn't get a tunit box for the new engine so opted instead for somebody to blow the ECU chip. I did my research and went to a reputable mob near Birmingham (I want to say DMS but I can't remember). They took the ECU out, put it on a rig and blew an extra 40ish BHP and around twice that in torque (they said that the only way to get more was to take the DPF out). On the way home up to the North West the car felt like a flying machine!

However, my mate had the same year/engined X5 so we did a side by side 0-120 before the remap and the X6 was a tiny bit quicker but only a matter of a few feet.

When I got back I repeated the test and there was absolutely no difference until I got to about 90mph where the X6 started to pull away from the X5... I was gutted.... I was trying to get a 50d on the cheap and it didn't work.

However, at risk of loosing my licence I continued to experience the increased upper end benefits until, not long after the remap the car went into limp home mode with a DPF related fault. It was a hot spell in the year and I was driving the X6 like I stole it... up the M6 when all power was lost and I managed to get about 50mph and pulled off the motorway. I let it cool, switched the car off and on and all was fine. The car was about 18 months old so I took it to BMW who, as their first action, reloaded the map.... DMS (or whoever it was) where happy to reload the map but I just didnt see the point and haven't bothered since..

Now... I have just got a 140 and I'm thinking of getting it chipped but to just kid the engine to driving higher fuel pressure doesn't seem too clever... what to do...mmmmm what to do..
