So what is the entitlement to an M badge

The first car I ever owned with an ///M badge was a silver 323i e21 back in about 1990. It was about as M as my Nan's fridge but it wasn't about the car, it was a reflection of my aspiration to own one.
A couple of years back, whilst refuelling my E30 M3, a chap in an '09 plate M3 made some comment about ''badged up 318's'' and asked ''why do people stick M badges all over what is blatantly not an M car?'' I told him it was factory spec' but he clearly didn't believe me.
So this car appears to have the correct M badges, but an illegal number plate. Not sure that's so much better than fake M badges...A couple of years back, whilst refuelling my E30 M3, a chap in an '09 plate M3 made some comment about ''badged up 318's'' and asked ''why do people stick M badges all over what is blatantly not an M car?'' The first ever "M Sport" car BMW made IIRC....I picked mine up new in 1996, it was a great car. I traded it in for an E36 M3 the next year which whilst it was obviously quicker I didn't think worked as well as an overall package as the 328i.
Fair. I currently have an E46 330ci Sport and have always been under the impression it was just that, no mention of M Sport whatsoever, which I am very happy with. It does have an M on the steering wheel, the top of the gear stick, and on each of the MV2 wheels before I swaped to 17" for cheaper tyre options. I even checked with BMW and they verified the gear knob is the right part for the car, and supplied me with a less worn genuine reply.
That said, the car has also aquired Clubsport front spliters and door cills as some point in its life. So even I am not authenticate, not that I care.
Car before that was a 'lowly' E36 316i compact, on paper it's not even half the car, gutless and loud on the motorway, but to drive round the lanes it was a very nice thing, and much more on controlled on the limit than then 330ci.

The E36 cars were called 328i Sport, not 328i M Sport. They were pre-dated by the E30 325i Sport (that came from the factory fitted with ///M badges front and rear as an option), and technically, the first M Sport car was the E12 M535i that was unveiled in 1979
(The first M car was the M1 unveiled in 1978 - But that is seen as a full blown ///M car, unlike the E12 M535i)
As for your E46 330i Sport that you are so happy makes: "no mention of M Sport whatsoever", sorry to burst your bubble, but your car is simply an early version of the car that BMW eventually renamed the 330i M Sport when it did a facelift of the model.

Yes, I realise the car was facelifted and rebranded M Sport. I just mean that I feel no need to add the M badges.

M Sport is a badge exercise.
M is a division in itself.
Audi S Line same thing
AMG line, same thing.
It's the halo effect of the real thing.
Purists will say N/A was the last pure M.
I covet an X5 M, as long as its quick and handles, i don't care about the badge, i always take the advertising off anyway.

Hi folks im new to pistonheads and would like to add this info, due to life I need a practical car and am looking at a 220i grand tourer M sport. It has 1 M badge each side where a side indicator would be, M wheels, M sport suspension and an M sport front and rear bumper and M sport side skirts. It has M striped full leather interior with accented blue stitching and a M sport steering wheel. The colour of the car is Estoril blue. While its not a true M car it tried very hard. Hope this helps the entitlement issue lol.
My 330ci SPORT (not m sport) is pre-facelift but has exactly the same amount of m badges plastered over it by the factor as the facelift e46 330ci “m sport” and there’s just some lighting differences & Rev counter is slightly different and gearbox is 6 speed not 5 on facelift.
M135/m140i m235i etc are sooo good a car they’re NEARLY as good as the m car’s NEARLY ..... I think they deserve an m-lite type badging myself
