I've seen a guy at knockhill with a sticker on his clocks saying "side stand" and he still rode off with it down the pit, to be fair it hit the ground and pinged right back up.

Why would you have one and disable the cut off?

I know that on desmoquattro Ducatis people have had ££ problems not warming up the bike properly as they have to be sitting on it to run the engine.

Are people incapable of riding at low revs to warm their bike thoroughly?

Or is this regarding track days where they just leave the pits and go for it?

Just impatience I suppose. I think you have to be careful that the oil reaches the rocker arms.

Unless the bike hasn't been run in a very VERY long time, dry running isn't a problem. In fact the heads retain enough oil to make sure it doesn't happen. From stone cold, the thick oil can take up to a minute to reach the heads but by far the biggest culprit was crap chroming from the rocker manufacturer and poor valve clearances causing the failures.
Once the motor has achieved a moderate temp, stopping and starting through the day, or giving it the beans right from the pits will make no difference as there'll be plenty of oil retained around the valve gear and the oil is warm enough that it'll pump to the heads as soon as the pump starts turning at turnover.

That's interesting, thanks. If and when I pick one up I'll probably err on the side of caution anyhow. smile

The Moto Rapido link says it all.
Run Quality oil, make sure the rockers are adjusted properly, and from very cold ( <10 degrees) give it a moment to warm up. But it's better to warm up a bike the race way, sharp cracks on the throttle rather than just let it idle away. At idle, the water and oil pumps are not so efficient so better to use short bursts of moderate rpm to keep everything moving and warming up. I've seen the insides of more Desmoquattro engines than I care to mention, including my race motors and they're not a particularly fragile design, if kept within certain limits.
The belts need to be kept in good order and tension. Make sure whoever changes them has either of the tensioning tools. There's a sonic tester and a tension tester. The Sonic is the official Ducati workshop unit and works well whereas the tension tester is aimed more at the home/occasional use.
The BIGGEST killer however is over revving. Even the rev limiter is very harsh and even a small trip to will start to kill the bottom end and cases in no time. These motors make gobs of torque so use it rather than chasing high rpm like on a IL4.

That was fantastic. I love the way there was a token tyre up against a lamp post on on one exit. That would have made all the difference........

I doubt if you'd get away with just perching the pooch on the tank, but it's not illegal if the dog is secured properly.

The best I ever saw was at the TT years ago. A couple on a Vincent, with three Yorkshire Terriers. One in the tank bag and two in bags slung over the passenger's shoulders. Each dog had a little perspex flyscreen...

Usually, it's just a box behind the rider, either with a lid, or open, with a harness for the dog.
