£4695 here http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C300246I think they're a really cool looking thing. Bit more unusual than a Laverda, Norton Commando or Triumph Bonneville etc. 1972's the last year of free tax too, I think

Andy XRV said: spareparts said: Great thread! I'd love one of these - the most astounding all round bike I've ridden. Just needs an alternative seat... I also can't get it out of my head. The Pikes Peak edition at ExCel was absolutely gorgeous but at nearly 16K it's hard to justify...or is it? I had one as a loaner bike for a week and put some serious mileage on it solo and two up too. Astounding motor with so much grunt and willingness. From the moment you start it up with the keyless fob, see the dashboard light up like the Millenium Falcon, and realise the electronic suspension really works well, the Multi feels special and a class above anything else. Yes, it is expensive, but it is worth it imho - far more than a GS. I would have pulled the trigger the other week if I hadn't succumbed to my lust for the totally impractical

I'm not normally a big fan of very old bikes but I do like this one and if I had a spare 10k to spend on a bike this could tempt me http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C299810#Srob - be happy to hear what you know about these?

But as soon as the weather settles down I'm going to give it another go because I really want to like it as much as you. So what did you succumb to that's totally impractical?

Well, if we're doing what I want rather than what's for sale... A replica of this (or possibly the small tank/high bars flat track version) - Daytona Gold Star: New frames and engines are available, the only problem is that it would have to be MSVA'd as a new bike.

Not sure if to go for the Pikes Peak and then add panniers, or go for the Touring S and get the Akropovics put on

Well I ride a big fat tourer, so if I won the lotto I guess I'd go out and buy... some even bigger and fatter tourers, like the BMW K1600GTL and a GL1800 'Wing ...but I'd probably also buy something impractical, with a riding position like a hobbit shagging a spacehopper.

To be honest mate, I don't really know anything about them! I spotted this for sale the other night, and I was struck by how cheap it is. Vintage singles (Pre-31) tend to have a bit of a pecking order when it comes to value. At the bottom is two-strokes - mainly because they were the cheap, economy bikes of all ranges. Next are sidevalve machines, then overhead valve and at the top is overhead cam. Nobody really made a twin-cam single in that era. There are exceptions - overhead valve Nortons seem to be on a par with overhead cam ones - but as a general rule of thumb it tends to be like that. For a British vintage, OHC bike (Norton CS1/Velocette K series), you'd be looking at close to double the £10k asked for that, as a minimum. European machines seem to be very cheap by comparison, whether spares availablility has anything to do with that, I don't know. I could think of worse places to put £10k, and enjoy riding it safe in the knowledge that every mile you're doing the bike's earning you money. I could also think of some better places *cough* 30s Velocette KSS...

Out of interest, what does the Pikes Peak get extra besides the paint job to justify the £2k over the standard price? Nothing obvious on the spec sheet. http://www.ducati.com/compare/index.do?op=add&...
