Congratulations on passing your DAS 
I was in the same situation as you about 8 months ago. I couldn't decide between a cbr600f and a hornet. I decided to go for a hornet in the end as I found a really nice example for a good price. I did get a chance to test ride both and performance wise they are pretty similar with the cbr600f having a little more power top end. Another deciding factor was the insurance which was considerably cheaper with the hornet. I've decided to keep the hornet for at least a year before upgrading to a sports bike as a years NCB will help.
Obviously the riding positions are slightly different and you get more wind protection with the fairing on the cbr600f. I'd recommend test riding both and see which one you feel comfortable on.

How is this possible? Do you work for an insurance company or something? Or is that a typo and do you mean £900? The old CBR 600f (2000 spec). I don't know why insurance is so cheap. TPFT, standard excess, 28 yo 11 yrs in a car with full no claims, no convictions or accidents, cambridge postcode, bike in locked garage and social use only and as I said no bike experience and passed test last month.

I got one after passing my DAS last year, cracking bikes. easy to ride. Mines a FX (ally frame last of the carbs)Sounds like an ideal choice then..what should I look out for when buying? Any common faults?
Common faults
Standard downpipes like to corrode, do check the collector box.
Cam chain tensioner can get noisy.
Reg/rec can go.
Also if its over 16k make sure the valve clearances have been done, got mine checked and nearly all of them were really tight.
Apart from that solid bikes.
Since I passed my DAS I have only ever ridden cbr600f's
Bought a cheap nasty 1996 one first as thought I might drop it..
Then quickly (3 months) changed to the injected 2003 one I have now. FI is the way to go, who wants a manual choke.
Couple of years since I passed and its still plenty for me, although would like to change just for something different at this point.

Firstly, congrats on passing your DAS! Whereabouts are you in the Cambs area?
As for the bike, CBR is a good choice, but my advice would be to try a few different bikes and see what you get on with before you purchase. I changed bike 4 times in the first few years of riding, until I found one that suited me. I probably lost a fair few quid chopping around in the process.
Having said that, I'm fancying getting a Triple, to chuck about when I'm in the mood - just not brave enough to tell the missus the garage is going to get fuller at the minute!

Thanks for the advice. Im in Trumpington. Did my training with CamRider (who were excellent).
