Hi guys,
Am looking at an FZR600R and was wondering if there were any common faults to look for when I go and have a look?
Seems tidy and is relatively low mileage (22,000 for a 1996 plate), has 12 months mot, some tax and has full service history, guy wants £1,000.
Thanks,
Tom

Rusty exhaust is the main (and most expensive) fault IIRC.
A colleague spend hundreds (at main dealer) getting his replaced.

Buy it on condition.
Commons faults don't really matter on a bike that is already 16 years old.
If it is at all ratty, then look elsewhere; £1000 will get you a cracking bike these days so why put up with junk. NEVER buy the first bike you go and see.

Cheers guys,
That's the only problem with being down in Cornwall (and the far west of it), the selection to choose from is pretty sparse, particularly in this case as the FZR is in Plymouth, 60 miles away, makes it a little harder to pop around for a quick viewing!!
Going to have a look on Saturday though, see what it's like.
Also looking at a 1997 SRAD 600, £1,200, went and had a look last night and it looks tidy for the ago and money, but the mileage is at 39,000 miles, and i have that nagging feeling in the back of my head that although nothing is wrong with it now, it could all be just round the corner!!
Any thoughts?

FZR600 was my bogey bike.
I bought mine mint and crashed it 3 or 4 times before selling it in pieces to a mechanic.
IMHO look at a CBR instead.

Hi ho mate, yes it is, it seems tidy, the seller is going to get back to me about mot history etc, but it doesn't have any service history, receipts etc, and it does have a clunk into 2nd gear, which is apparently the same with all FZR's. Also liking the look of a ZXR750 H1, the chap has done a lot of work to it, and it looks stunning, 12 months mot and decent mileage as well, same price as the FZR, but a whole lot better looking (in my opinion!!)

Thank you for the offer matey, i may well take you up on the offer, it's currently 3rd on my list to view, but unfortunately the ZXR is a bit far away for a viewing, so that might be a hope for the best. Although have had a snoop about and found the bike on a forum in a rebuild thread, and some good work has been done to it, which makes it a little easier to trust.

Aah, you're Cornish; tell me, do those webbed toes make it more difficult changing gear? Seriously though, always be willing to travel for a decent bike rather than stick with the small pool of the surrounding area (that applies to genetics too by the way...). Last year, I put a drunken bid on a Triumph Trophy and ended up flying from Edinburgh to Exeter then taxi to Torquay to collect it before riding it home that day. What you do have in your favour is that bikes at your end of the country generally haven't had much salt exposure over the winter compared with those that get ridden up here in God's Country (Scotland to you), however they are often overpriced and have been passed round and ridden hard more times than a village slapper.

Ha, they do, but it's ok, i've got special boots!! The ZXR is in Southampton, so not too bad, about 300 mile round trip, and not the first time i've travelled for a vehicle...to be honest i've only bought one car or bike out of probably 20 from within a 50 mile radius of home!!

Any thoughts? With yamahas justifiable reputation for motors that drink oil and poor finish of teh era(even vs Suzuki's) , id have the Suzuki, its a miles better bike anyway , IF ..and its a big IF ...its been well looked after, any bike of this age will have had plenty of previous "enthusiastic" owners, often newbies, so as said above, buy on condition. You can spend £3000 on a nightmare or £1000 on a beauty in the second hand market, keep your eyes peeled...
