I know Rossi's is one of the greatest bike riders and has nothing to prove, but do you think he should have stuck with Ducati until they got the bike right ?
Would that have cemented his reputation even further ?
Im no Anorak on these things but Stoner (and yes I am a fan of his) seemed to be able to ride the nut's of the Ducati.
Just a thought guy's......

Just a thought guy's...... I think Rossi may wanna knock Ago off of the all time race wins spot, he has beaten him for podiums from memory but he needs some more wins. That to him may cement him in history more at this stage and age.

Dan Trent said: FYI the official announcement from Yamaha reads thus: Yamaha said: Yamaha Factory Racing Press Statement
It is with great pleasure that Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd confirms the signing of Valentino Rossi to ride for the Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP Team for 2013 and 2014.
Valentino Rossi first joined Yamaha in 2004 and achieved four MotoGP World Champion titles with the Yamaha YZR-M1 in 2004 & 2005 and again in 2008 & 2009. He won 46 Grand Prix races with Yamaha over a 7 year period before leaving at the end of the 2010 MotoGP season. Rossi, who is presently 8th in the Championship standings, will partner Jorge Lorenzo who currently leads the 2012 MotoGP World Championship by 23 points, having taken five victories from the first ten completed races of the 18 race series.
Lin Jarvis – Managing Director, Yamaha Motor Racing “This announcement is once again excellent news for Yamaha. In June we were able to sign Jorge Lorenzo for the 2013-14 campaign and now we are able to confirm Valentino Rossi for the next two years. In doing so we have been able to put together the strongest possible team to challenge for victories and to promote the Yamaha brand.
We have run this ‘super team’ together in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and during that time we achieved the ‘triple crown’ titles with Rider, Manufacturer and Team World Championship victories for three consecutive years.
The target for the future is obvious and we will do our utmost to achieve our goals. I have no doubt that with the experience, knowledge, skills and speed of these two great champion riders we will be able to challenge for many race wins and for the 2013 & 2014 World Championship titles.
The signing of Valentino completes our future planning for the Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP Team. Now that this is done we will put our 100% efforts into completing the job at hand and to supporting Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo in their search for race victories and for Jorge’s 2012 World Championship title challenge.” It was Rossi that made the Yamaha M1 the bike it is today, before he joined it was a dog of a bike that no-one wanted to ride. Go Rossi...It is going to be great to see you back on your beloved Yamaha

I love Rossi, i really do, he is one of my idols and the main reason i tune in on a Sunday afternoon. But, With old pencil neck retiring this year, and now murmurs of a Ducati pull out lurking in the shadows, what kind of a tin pot championship is there going to be left for him to win?
This year has been a 3 horse race come sunday, and were it not for the heroics of young crutchlow, then i fear that motogp died along with Simoncelli.
It seems that track cycling and swanning round france in a yellow sweater has taken the mantle of 'the hero's on 2 wheels'

To answer a few with regards to my post.
Honda v Yamaha, sure Honda have recently been the ones to beat, but are we forgetting the riders, dominance with one of the best ever, Doohan and then Rossi and i dont think anyone will deny his credentials. So then Rossi moves to Yamaha and wins, was anyone really surprised that the best rider in the world at the time won, all be it on a Yamaha? Who did he really have to beat, Gibernau, Biaggi and Barros all way past their prime whilst Rossi was in his! I would be truly surprised if any biker thinks that the win on the Yamaha was just down to his development of it, especially his first season, maybe in a second season you could say it was solely his development, but not first! Which leads me nicely into, if Rossi can turn the Yamaha round single handedly (as you all think), why cant he do that on the Ducati?
None of us on here personally know Rossi, but you all seem to think you know him and his reasons through what the press and documentaries want you to think! So a couple of questions, knowing now he still yearns to win with his move back to Yamaha.
Would Rossi have originally moved to Yamaha if he thought they had a sh*t bike and couldnt win? Would Rossi have moved to Ducati if he thought they had a sh*t bike and couldnt win?
Rossi obviously wants to be considered the greatest of all time, perhaps his move to Yamaha explains this, win on 2 different manufacturers, maybe he pushed the boat out too far with Ducati, but i will be damn sure he saw Stoner winning and thought, if he can win, so can i and then i will have won with 3 different manufacturers and probably beat Ago's record of wins in the process!
I think Rossi is awesome by the way (although not a fan), just as Lorenzo, Stoner, even Pedrosa as they seem to be the only ones capable of regular wins in recent years. I am not bashing Rossi, but looking at his career moves with a little bit of, he aint no mug and knows EXACTLY what he is doing thought, rather than the rose coloured glasses, should then very much explain his move to Yamaha, Ducati and now back to Yamaha.

I think he has a chance to beat his race wins but I'd be v. surprised if he could beat Ago's 500cc championships of 8. Equal maybe, but beat I dunno unless Lorenzo basically has a season like Stoner's 2009 for the next 2 years, which is about as likely as pigs flying

MrKipling43 said: I guess the question is, how determined is Lorenzo to make sure that he can't? I'm sure he's going to be very determined!!, we can all make predictions but really at the moment Rossi back on a Yamaha is a bit of an unknown quantity as he had that injury in 2010 and was starting to do well and win again towards the end of the season, then there has been 2 seasons on a bike that for one reason or another he can't get on with, Lorenzo may well still blitz him next year, Rossi could still have the pace and beat him, it really is an unknown until testing after Valencia or really Quatar next year, all I'm hoping for is some fantastic close racing and good luck to whichever of them wins.

Doohan then Rossi, total dominance? No it wasn't, again I think you lack knowledge, Rossi jumped on a 500 2 stroke and in his first year fought hard with seasoned veterans of 2 stroke 500 racing but Roberts won the crown, the rumour at the time was can this young lad do as he has in 125 and 250's learn in the first year and win the title in the second? He did, if Marquez does that we'll be amazed. As for Biaggi and co being past their prime when Rossi jumped on the Yamaha I find that incorrect all the Honda riders were rubbing hands in glee, Biaggi thought he had that race and what a race. The other statement ref Stoner winning on the Ducati and and therefore he could, no s h it sherlock thats a no-brainer of course he did as did Burgess. However he didn't but at 33 he is still racing, podium'd the Ducati twice couldn't get on with it, lost a friend in an accident he was involved in but still wants to race, I admire the motivation.

BSB / WSB. More action in 1 race than a whole season of Moto GP Hopefully with Rossi on something he's more comfortable with, we'll see more action at the front again.

Doohan titles 94, 95, 96, 97 & 98 Rossi 01, 02, 03 barring Criville with his 99 win and as you say Roberts Jnr in 00, i would say thats dominance from Doohan & Rossi, perhaps we have a different view on dominance, but i would say out of 10 years, Doohan and Rossi winning 8 of those years is pretty dominating, or still not? And the 10 years before Doohans title, Honda 3 titles and Yamaha 6 (double in case your struggling), perhaps its you who lacks knowledge as you seem to think watching Fastest makes your opinion gospel! Yamaha have NEVER been bad bikes, if you dont want to believe that, its up to you!

The Yamaha in the 500cc two-stroke era was very different to the 990cc M1. Prior to Rossi coming to Yamaha they hadn't won with the 990cc bike. Rossi's win in South Africa in the first race of the year was a genuine shock as nobody expected him to drag the M1 to first place in his first race. He won the last race of the previous year on the dominant 990cc V5 Honda and won the first race of the next season on the ill handling M1.

3 things from a non-biker; Firstly, Rossi needs to be loved. I think he had all the love at Yamaha but didn't get it at Ducati. A bit like having a pretty, dutiful and clever wife who is reliable, then leaving her for a supermodel who turns out to be vacuous and ultimately unfulfilling. Secondly, haven't ween seen this before in Carl Fogerty? An ace on a Ducati but average on anything else. Lastly, surely it's better all round for Rossi to be st Yamaha, to add to the spectacle and battle for podium finishes rather than being like an old boxer who is just fighting to get paid (not a great analogy but I'm very tired!) I'm not and never have been a biker but I love Moto GP and BSB, the battles are always close and exciting unlike F1 where drivers just follow each other like a procession (the same effect can be seen watching the boy racers go round and round any towns inner ring road). Here's one who will be cheering VR on!

No, Yamaha 2 strokes were good, but the M1 4 stroke was rubbish till Rossi and Burgess turned it around over the winter. Trying to diminish any aspect of Valentino's career or achievements simply defines you as a muppet with an agenda.

Rossi did nothing but polish a rough diamond, the bike Barros did his final race on was pretty much (bar the swingarm) the same bike Rossi won on. The RCV211V had no pre race Rossi development on it, that was down to Okada (and even Doohan had ridden it) The only real development he had to do was for the 800cc yam, and the Ducati. When you look at facts, you see Rossi isn't the 'development master' that the myth says he is, 'fix that front end in 80 seconds' eh burgess? 'maybe Casey wasn't riding it hard enough' eh VR? VR probably is the greatest showman the sport has ever seen, and certainly one of the greatest riders of all time, but his time at Ducati will haunt his career profile forever. As for next season.. My money's on JL, at 33 I just can't see VR having the physical ability to keep with the youths week in week out. Hell I've even had a tenner on MM93 finishing above VR in the title hunt. Final words... 'the rider is more important than the bike' not in your case eh VR.

Someone back in 2011 said: I'll say this now.. Spies will be THE revelation of 2012, he will wallop yourgay on the 1000's! : I can't find it but I'm sure I commented in a post about a year ago that Rossi's move to Ducati might just prove to be "a move too far". Ironically I hope for his sake that the same won't be said of his return to Yamaha.

Whatever, 95% is 5% short of a Podium Picnic, the M1 pre Rossi was not a winning beast, without him it never would have been. The guy is simply beyond criticism, the difficulties at Ducati diminish nothing, you can believe what you want, but as so often, it seems motivated by other factors, not reality.
