Bike magazines
Discussion
I don't bother with MCN as motorcycle news in general appears on the web within minutes. So I've generally seen it before Wednesday when it's released.
The other mags offer good features and the like which don't lose the impact or interest because a few days have passed.
I get both Bike and MS&L on the iPad now. Recommended indeed as I don't end up with an old pile of mags but can go back and reread them.

I have to buy them in the "international Press" shop at the railway station,
or on the rare occasion that I am travelling to Santa Pod.

AWOL was better, more authentic, but has gone....AWOL...due to financial troubles long ago.
Is the "Used Motorcycle Guide" still in existance ?
By the way, I just had a search for Uncle Bunt (John Reed) and found out
that this excellent brit custom builder
worked as design director for Custom Chrome in USA until his retirement.
If the youngsters here are not familiar with the name,
maybe one of his famous creations will ring a bell :

Long time reader and purchaser of BIKE, Fast Bikes, Superbike and PB. Recently have gotten into Classic Bike a bit (my first issue was one about James May's CB400/4). This month's issue is brilliant with the Ducati 750 Sport and BMW R90 , as well as a piece about John Surtees.
Fast Bikes used to be the Max Power of the bike world but they've gotten better, testing cruisers and adventure tourers now a little bit and analyzing them from a sporting perspective.
BIKE is absolutely spot-on imo and is up there with evo among motoring magazines in general.

Been subscribing to Performance Bikes since the late 80s I think and buying it since its Motorcycle Mechanics days.
However, my interest in the new stuff is dropping rapidly, the last 2 months worth of P.B are sitting in their wrappers still, while I plough my way thru Practical Sportsbikes mag and buying old 1980s mags.
I think I may be dropping PB this year amd swapping my sub to P.S mag.
Another sign of my advancing years maybe!
Pete, have you still got issue 1 of P.S? ...wish id bought a few of these...

I have every issue since it came out. I've heard issue 1 goes for over £100 on e-bay! I think someone sold issue 1,2,3 all together for quite a lot too as none of these can be re-printed now. Should flog mine really. However, my interest in the new stuff is dropping rapidly, the last 2 months worth of P.B are sitting in their wrappers still, while I plough my way thru Practical Sportsbikes mag and buying old 1980s mags.

PS is the most appealing mag for me. My opinion might be coloured a little by the fact that they featured our RG500 Spondon specials in one of the early issues but if you are into 2 strokes it's the best mag out there.
Classic Bike is the beardies choice.
The current issue has a feature on an RD LC special with a TZR reverse cylinder engine built by Darren Lane, the guy who built our bikes.

I subscribe to Bike because Mrs K1 bought me a subscription a couple of years ago and I've never quite got around to cancelling it.
I like the fact that Ride undertake reasonably scientific tests of kit/accessories etc. to establish if they really do what they claim. This, for me, is a much better approach than the two standards that seem to be adopted by most motorcyclist:
1. It's brand X, I've always used brand X so it must be good.
2. It's expensive so it must be good.
Or the standard magazine approach of, this company spends a lot in advertising with us so we'll say just how wonderful thier products are. However, being a little on the tight side, I've never subscribed to Ride and only buy it occasionally as it always seems there is just a little less of it than other mags.
I avoid most of the others as they seem to fall into one of two camps:
1. Lots of old bikes that seem to spend more time in pieces in the garage than on the road.
2. Covering the latest hyper/mega/super dooper sports bikes which will re-write biking history and will shave another 0.000001 of a second off getting your knee down at the local roundabout.

We've been working hard to change the feel of SuperBike magazine over the last 12 months. Sales have started moving in the right direction and the general feedback is that it's getting better. If you haven't seen it for a while and would like to flick through a free copy, message me or email John@superbike.co.uk with your address and I'll stick one in the post.
Cheers

I genuinely don't know anyone who reads Superbike. It's always felt like a low rent PB and without a USP or something it did better than other mags. I haven't picked it up for a couple of years though.Cheers
John
What direction have you been trying to take the feel?

I used to ALWAYS buy Superbike in the 90's and early 00's but in recent years, its fallen into a no mans land, I viewed it as a monthly MCN in the end, only really bought it when I was interested in more than 1 feature, which wasnt very often, I find the font is too "cramped" and the lay out of the whole mag is just fussy/messy, from my occasional browse in Tesco's.
Shame as it was cracking , with some great feature writers, particularly in the Dan Harris/John Cantile era..(havent they both gone into grown up jobs n and proper bother now!)
For 25 odd years I never missed a copy of any magazine, what seemed to happen 5 or 7 years ago was that all the mags had the same bikes on test, one would say a certain bike was good while another would say it wasn't so good.
I only buy MCN news now as they seem to have given their content a damn good shake up. Plenty of good articles on bikes and racers from years ago.
The Dakar write up the last few weeks has been good, same with the Moto GP reviews.
There is so much that goes on every year that the biking press in general misses.
I like to be engaged and entertained when I read a magazine or a book, maybe some of today's hacks should go back and read some of the articles their predecessors contributed to many years ago.
John Robinson springs to mind as does the late Kevin Ash. Not always what people agreed with but a damn sight better than "some" of the content that gets touted in today's bike press.
No, I couldn't do any better.
Now, who do I see for that Free copy of SB? (is Sonic still at SB)
