Personally I loved my progression through the cc categories, and feel people miss out if they jump straight on a big bike.

I went 50cc, 125, 400, 250 (2-stroke!), 400 then 636. I think I'd have missed a lot of fun by skipping the littler bikes smile

But those bikes were not designed as you say to have a desired power to weight. That's the killer here, shame really.
Well one of them was restricted (an RVF400), still enjoyed it though.

Yes by power not weight as well! Must be a really uninspiring design brief for them.

Yeah but I'm sure people will be doing power restricting kits for the new laws? All the kits are bespoke to the bike so there's no reason you couldn't adjust the power to suit the weight of the bike.

I agree though, a pretty dull design brief and hats off to Honda for even having a go!

Agreed, tbh I quite like the look of it and the 500 crossrunner. Seem to be on my own though!

This.

What was stopping them from making bikes like the CBR400RR ,VFR400s & ZX400Rs in the 90s? With the exception of ABS and FI, this isn't much further ahead from a 20 year old GPZ500.

The Bike review suggested these were tiny and that the YZF R125 is better proportioned as a full-sized bike.

That's because it's the same size as the R6...

I suspect the sort going to buy a tarted-up commuter is sadly exactly the sort that wouldn't want to move up to 'just' a 600.
Thankfully, also the sort unlikely to understand the concept of properly using a revrange however smile.

its over-weight so next year it can 'lose' 4kg and change fairing colours. And the year after, and the year after, etc they design it in. Then it will get usd forks; then 'new' pistons etc etc <yawn>

It's "overweight" because it's built to meet a power to weight limit. If it loses weight it has to lose power too, surely?!

I thought someone said it could be 20 kgs lighter with that power.
edit yeah at that max power (35kw) it can weigh a min of 175kgs. This weighs 194kgs.

I think at that power output it could get down to 170ish kgs (with my dodgy man maths)

Must admit I haven't read into it that thorougly but I'd inagine there's a reason (other than a cynical one!) that it's heavy. Often cost!

Why is it so heavy?

It's a shame new riders are so limited. My first bike was far more interesting!

Too those of you who like working out power to weight ratios.. Could you ride something like the NC700s or x on a A2 licence?

I'm asking because my daughter is considering doing her test (she's 18, so I've told her to wait till she's 19 (she likes the look and the idea of them)) and all this power/weight ratio crap is doing my head in.

just try one. Some heavy bikes feel light to ride. The rake / seat height etc all affect it.
