No reason to be afraid of them, if you're going to make a stupid beginner mistake and come off your bike it won't matter if you're on a commuter or a sports bike, you'll still make the mistake. On the flipside of the coin, it won't be long before you realise you can quite easily ride a GSX-F well above the speed limit - and in that sense it's no different to a GSX-R, except the R has better brakes, better suspension and handling etc. I'm not saying what to get, that's totally up to you, but everyone I know who went for the "sensible" option just ended up with the ballache of selling it and buying the bike they wanted in the first place. I can't speak for litre bikes as I haven't ridden one, but 600s imo are more like riding a keen horse than a raging bull. They do want you ask them too, they're generally not unpredictable, they won't lift the front wheel unless you deliberately provoke them. Buy the bike you want, not the one you think you need, and build up to it. You don't need to redline it through the gears on your way out of the dealers, take as long as you need to get comfortable before you really start using all of the power.
Speaking of a bike that is reputedly a right git to ride, a bike I've always liked the look of:
Are these really as dangerous as the reputation would have you believe? According to the internets - admittedly not the most reliable source of info, these things will spit you off at high speed, go home, murder your family and cancel your Netflix subscription.

I did like the idea of getting a Triumph Daytona 675 but this hilarious video put me off getting one for a first bike.

I had one of the very, very first B1-Hs in 2003. It was a parallel import and I got it before most people I knew that had a UK order got theirs. Speaking of a bike that is reputedly a right git to ride, a bike I've always liked the look of:

I found it was quite extreme, but I forgave it as it really was the new generation of 600 coming through. All my mates had CBR600Fs and stuff, one or two had the 'new' R6 and the CBR600RR hadn't landed. In fact that's what I wanted, but I was young and impatient!
I only crashed it once, but that wasn't really my fault. A woman pulled out in front of me then froze and stopped, so I did the decent thing and did a huge comedy stoppie, pirouetting through 90 degrees before imprinting myself into the side of her car. Didn't fall off though.
Pissed ramblings but in summery, they're quite banzai but not a patch on a good 250 two stroke for mentalness!

Unless google has stitched me up, that's a ZX10R I found it was quite extreme, but I forgave it as it really was the new generation of 600 coming through. But still I do value your opinion on the ZX6R, I sometimes forget that you didn't always ride inter-war bikes

Unless I'm more pissed than I thought, that's definately a ZX636B1-H!But still I do value your opinion on the ZX6R, I sometimes forget that you didn't always ride inter-war bikes
And yeah, I've ridden most types of bikes in my time. Now I'm happy tootling about on vintage stuff but I was trackdaying in the mid to late 90s when I was in my late teens and trackdays were very different to now!

Without a steering damper, leaving the rear shock on standard (rock hard) settings and using second and third gears down a bumpy B-road was eye opening.Speaking of a bike that is reputedly a right git to ride, a bike I've always liked the look of:

It regularly shook it's head so violently (without ever getting into a full blown tank-slapper) that I actually bent the pushrod and piston on a Matris damper clipping the kerb at Sunny at Croft.
No traction control, no abs, no fancy electronic this and that and only high 140's BHP and I still can't match my lap times from 10 years ago.
Great machines.
When fitted with a steering damper

Mines bloody frisky, just had a full suspension rebuild, new fork springs etc... If I can get it handling it'll be an awesome bike as it's bloody fast for a 600 even with my fat arse onboard.

Lol no it is fairly priced not a bargain but was surprised how immaculate it was. Not a mark on it.
That's the GSX-F model though, you could probably get a GSX-R for the same. Maybe with a few more miles on it, but then it's a hell of a lot more bike for the money.PM me if you want to discuss the F's merits and short comings in more details

I was in the same spot as you when I first started looking and eventually settled on the GSXF due to a number of reasons first being the insurance which was 3x more expensive on the gsxr as a new rider the second being the power delivery of each bike the F is built for low down power it pulls very well from 2.5-3k and tails off towards 10k where the R likes to be revved which didn't suit me for how I tend to use the bike
PM me if you want to discuss the F's merits and short comings in more details
Thanks for that, I've been considering all sorts of bikes, a cbr, nc750s, Hornet, street triple, sv650 etc but the gsx650f seems to be the one that ticks all the boxes. PM me if you want to discuss the F's merits and short comings in more details
