5) Could I could remove the unit and revert it to a non-ABS bike?
I thought that the latest EU regs meant that MOTs had to check original fitment items were working?£850 is a ridiculous price though, they must have only been £30 or so on the parts cost of the bike when new.
Not part of the bike MOT (yet?), and you can (completely) remove the ABS system and pass the car MOT.

I've thought about this too - the local kawa dealer said no it's not possible, but it clearly is possible as people have done it. I'm pretty sure the callipers and the master-cylinders are the same (at least the rear one), so I would just need new brake lines (I guess?). Certainly going to work out a lot cheaper than a whole new unit Not part of the bike MOT (yet?), and you can (completely) remove the ABS system and pass the car MOT.
