Passport confiscated and fined £350 for drinking when his wife had just tragically died. Tell you what no matter how much money you can earn over there or how hot it is fk living in such a backwards part of the world. aholes. Good to see he's finally coming back to the UK.
I went over there a couple of years ago, part business, part pleasure. Stayed with Chilli who made us feel very welcome but I couldn't get past the fact that once we moved out from his cosy home, you faced a dusty, unfinished hellhole.

I was offered a 3 month role out there earlier this year but wild horses wouldn't drag me back there. I like travelling, but would rather spend a month in a caravan at Filey than a week in 5 star hotel in Dubai

Sounds like when I went to the Dominican republic, some areas are developed and brand new, but for the most part the place is still 3rd world and you aren't really safe.

I've done loads of travelling / backpacking in the 3rd world and they are in the most, lovely places with lovely people with slight plumbing issues.

Most of them would be mortified to compared to the open prison in a desert / aircon'd shopping mall sh)thole that is Dubai.

But I bet he'll get tons and tons of compensation from them for their muck up.

Good news, poor fella.

And I've got to agree on the Dubai thing - I cannot see the attraction of the place at all. And don't forget that as a non-Arab/infidel you're at best a second class citizen there.

Having lived/worked in Bahrain and spent time there as well as in Dubai, I found it to be quite the opposite actually. The media will have people believe whatever they choose though I guess.

This particular case has been a nightmare though and it's nice to hear that Sean has been allowed home at last and can start to get on with life again, I can't imagine what it must've been like trying to grieve for a loved one amongst all of the ste he's been dealing with throughout.

They wanna have a word with their PR dept then, because like many others on this thread I'm reasonably well travelled - in some pretty rough places - and I wouldn't set foot in Dubai for all tea in China.

The trouble is it's not the only nightmare you hear about. Forcing an innocent guy to stay in the country for 9 months, whilst coping with the suicide of his wife is inhumane. They knew after 2 days it was a suicide. I'm sure if you don't fall foul of the authorities it's a perfectly nice place to live\visit, but if you do regardless of fault your freedom is then out of your hands, for that reason I will be avoiding the place.

yes the whole bks surrounding it with his drinking without a licence is just disgusting and it makes me think about all the concessions we as a country are forced to make to outsiders, we just roll over. Not that anything we would expect from them would be anything like as ridiculous as what's happened to Sean anyway..

Drinking without a licence??

Was this in a private establishment? I had no problem getting a drink in the hotels and restaurants in Dubai and never got asked for a licence. I'm pretty sure as a holidaymaker you don't need one to enjoy what is on offer at all the 5 and 6 star hotels. Maybe this was just trumped up.....and there lies the problem!

Hello mate!
That's cause you was with me...know them all around here. Seriously, it is a law that is applicable, even to residents who have a licence, as I do. It's a crime to be pissed in public, and I personally think its a very good one. If you are in a private residence, you must have a licence (for the premises). If it was a hotel, then it would have been no problem. However, it is a law that is hardly ever enforced as it is impossible, and is there simply to give the police the authority to nick someone if they are being a PITA. Once again, sounds brilliant to me.
I'm fed-up with defending the place, so I won't go on about it...it's not for everyone. But I will say to people that have never been, that an opinion formed based on a mate down the pub's experience, or what you read in the daily mail, your opinion is a st one.
It goes without saying I feel sorry for Sean, but to say it's a sthole and you'd never step foot in the place because of that is frankly idiotic. Ear, I heard about the Guildford 4 the other day....No way I'm stepping into that sthole of the UK and it's backward legal system!
The authorities here had their reasons for delaying the return of Sean's passport. Because they didn't ring up the daily mail and tell them doesn't mean the case was closed. It clearly wasn't.

Anyway, glad Sean's back and hope he can put all this behind him and move on.

Someone falls from a balcony and dies on their honeymoon and maybe the last person to see them alive keeps their liberty but is required to surrender their passport while the death is investigated. Seems straight forward to me.

As a fellow Dubai resident (evening nick), yes you do have think about the consequences of breaking the local rules. Yes it my choice to live here (spent 7 years living in India before Dubai), yes I travel almost every week for work, given how the UK is at the moment, I will be staying out here for while yet. Having experienced working in Oman, Saudi, Bahrain and Qatar give me Dubai over the other GCC countries.

Good news for Sean.

I agree entirely, my overall experience of living in the Middle East was nothing but positive. Yes there were a few peculiarities to adjust to along the way but I'd recommend Bahrain or the UAE to anyone. Now Saudi is a different kettle of fish...
