Messing about with new camera last night. YouTube seems to reduce the quality somewhat. Have been playing more with the needles there's a very fine sweet spot I found, tried to lift it another clip went the wrong way so it felt a bit flat, but you get the idea.. couldn't really go flat out but it picked up the sound well

Don't fancy coming along to Oulton this weekend to watch BSB do you? I'll be up there and would love to see it in the flesh

I was planning to take the car because my bike is tucked up waiting for someone to buy it. Might try and borrow a bike though if it's that bad.

Thought I should post an update, shame the rest of the thread is now fked due to the wkers at Photobucket.
Got the bike on Muttsnutts (Dave Whattam's) dyno over the weekend. Was really looking forward to getting it dialled in properly so went armed with all my bits. Day started off well, we were making gradual improvements and Mutts was very thorough, spending lots of time on low-mid part and full throttle running and gradual timing adjustments.
We seeming to be getting somewhere then we had major issues with my carbs. Half way through the day they became very inconsistent, we couldn't replicate a run on the dyno on the same jetting and tried absolutely everything, checked for leaks, checked fuel supply, cleaned the carbs out about 5 times.
This is similar to my experiences with the bike on the road, I can spend some time making adjustments and think I'm getting somewhere with it then it all goes backwards. Or I'll park the bike up thinking I've got somewhere and it'll run terrible the day after.
The only consistency I've had from the Mikuni TMX carbs is that they have been consistently inconsistent.
From the get go we had a bad flat line from about 4500-6000, but the initial response wasn't bad and it pulled hard on the pipe, just struggled to get on it. After the carbs started causing problems it had a terrible hesitation under load, similar to fuel starvation, and nothing we could do would remedy it and believe me we tried EVERYTHING.
At about 7.30pm and me ready to throw the towel in (or my toys out of the pram), Dave was still ready and willing to try something else, not wanting to admit defeat, and suggested we fit a set of 38mm PWK Airstrikers he had on the shelf he bought to try on his bike. We threw them on, unbalanced and unjetted, straight out of the box. Just as a way to eliminate whether it was in fact the carbs that fundamentally had some sort of issue.
He started the bike up and not only was there no hesitation under load, the bike took full throttle and pulled straight through the 5k-6.5k hole its always had! Obviously not perfect but way better the Mikunis ever were.
So there we have it, a few people have told me to get Keihin PWKs, but I guess seeing is believing. They are supposed to be a lot more forgiving than the TMX carbs with respect to altitude and ambient temps and give better low-mid performance.
If we hadn't tried them I would've been leaving completely disillusioned and pissed off, but as it happens I've never seen my bike perform that well and so I left actually quite excited and optimistic, needless to say I've got a set of 38mm PWK Air Strikers on order and am booked back in with Dave to get it dialled in.
Thanks to Dave for his patience and perseverance as I was ready to torch the bike at one point.

Great stuff Ryan, Dave knows his stuff eh and always has something lying around to work his magic with!
You going to be using the bike from now then mate? 109BHP in that chassis must be a riot..
I've been using it a bit but always been playing with the carbs and never found a setting I was remotely happy with. Once these new carbs arrive I'll be hoping to get them set up and use it as much as possible. You going to be using the bike from now then mate? 109BHP in that chassis must be a riot..
I'm a little naive to road smokers but was on them alot in the mx scene
We had a similar issue with one of mine running the same make carb and although this can be completely unrelated what you describe is what I was getting on the dyno
My RM250s made 46 and 47 at the wheel respectively however the older one would be a pig in the mid range, we tried pilot changes, needle, mixture and checked the plug but it kept fouling then going really lean (almost white)
Turned out the ecu on it wasn't sending the right info to the tps (throttle position sensor) and honestly it was a mule to train on
Quick fix was to fit a carb off a bike that ran similar sizing but non tps, jetted it on the dyno to suit and hey presto
Good luck with it though. I love smokers but years on them has made me lose my patience with them at times

Yeah, they can be a pain but generally the bike has been good and never broken down as such.
The carbs don't have a TPS, it's all been down to fuelling. I think the general consensus is that the Mikuni TMX can be gotten half decent but keeping it on that window or sweet spot is very difficult. They are a bh to tune too as the needle literature and options available are nowhere near as good as the Keihins. Oh well, at least I got the original ones for nothing and have a way forward!!
