CBTand buying a Desmo
Discussion
I don't get this obsession with chicken strip size. I understand where you are coming from to a degree, but to me it's more that you are saying sports bikes shouldn't be on the road.
I can get my strips down to a centimetre on the road but I wouldn't say that's safe riding, on a track I can get rid of them all but that's a different thing. If I turn up on my CBR do I get accepted because I have no chicken strips, and if I turn up on my 996 to I get abuse because I have 1" strips? I'm the same person but my use of the bike changes peoples views of my riding and ownership. It's a new bike to me and I haven't taken it on track yet, but just by looking at the bike you won't know that. Seems a bit silly to me.

Hello
A few questions for the masses - appreciate your help:
1.) I have a driving liicence pre 2000 - from what I've read that means I only require a DAS to get mobile? Does that mean I don't have to CBT? And hence it's a week to get a licence?
2.) What buyers tips do I need when buying a Desmo?
Thanks.
As far as I am aware, you need to do your CBT - no big deal, it's only 2 days and a part of the DAS package that you will book yourself in for.A few questions for the masses - appreciate your help:

Buyers tips I can not offer. But to reiterate what others have said, a Desmo is probably not a great bike to learn to ride on. But it all depends what you want the Desmo for - if you just want to pose on it and go fast as fk in a straight line, do it, if you can get insured. If you want to learn to ride a bike properly, buy the Desmo, stick it in your garage for now, and get something a little less extreme / less painful to crash to learn on for a year or so.

Fleegle, me and BN were out on track with a guy on a Desmo last year and it wasn't that impressive in a straight line compared to a 2005 R1 being ridden by the others. Hell even I managed to overtake it. Once.
Yeah, but his rear tyre kept spinning 2mm on his rim so I can understand why he wasn't up to speed. What I didn't understand was why the queen kept blocking the exit

I don't know where this impression that Desmo's are some MGP wannabe rocket ship. They only make around 155bhp so not exactly mega power. However, the motor is effectively a big bang configuration so much like the latest yam R1 they have a fantastic throttle to rear wheel connection.
The chassis however is superb once ride of the nasty standard Bridgestones.

1) Yes. DAS. Unless you're young in which case you'll have to wait in any instance.A few questions for the masses - appreciate your help:

2) Deep pockets, and an ability to put up with everybody having an opinion.
Best of luck.

Sorry for the late reply – have had a busy day. Thanks to all for the replies/ribbing/banter etc.
So first up I am talking about a Ducati Desmosedici RR. I’ve always been a car man through and through, but picked up a bike mag a while ago saw a Desmo and loved the looks. Then made the fateful mistake of watching a few YouTube videos and doing a bit or research and that was me hooked.
So combination of how it looks, how it sounds and the history if how it came about makes me just want to get one.
I also think it’ll be a reasonable investment, given:
1.) they’re unlikely to make a bike like that for the road again
2.) it really is an ultimate bike (like the F1 to cars)
3.) I feel bikes just haven’t caught up with cars on the appreciation curve (appreciate there is a more limited market, 1,500 were made etc - but significant bikes seem undervalued)
….well, that’s what I’ve told Mrs Duggan…
So, naturally, the first step is to get a licence – hence the question
I’ve also checked into insurance and there are other specialist brokers who’ll cover me – mid four figures on a few calls to them recently
Then it’s a case of getting one – prices seem to vary from 30-39k with 800-10,000 miles and only other spec differences seem to be the GP exhaust (I think this was an optional extra?) and/or the 17inch rear wheel (for tyre choice). Am fully aware that a limited carbon fibre clad is going to be expensive to repair – need to make sure I don’t drop/crash it. Would be good to hear if anyone has any other tips/things to look out for and also will be speaking to the professionals when finding the right one.
I was also looking at getting another bike (as advised by a few of you – thanks), as want to keep the miles down on the Desmo & to give me an easier ride to experience – was thinking 749R/999R.
And I would be one of those c0cks with chicken strips, but hey, we all had to start somewhere
PS – CBT now booked for next weekend and will be speaking to them about DAS/timelines – journey starts here!

Good point, it no doubt made it unrideable What I didn't understand was why the queen kept blocking the exit
It was his garage and we all had to admire the bike, It was funny when he stopped talking to us after BN stuffed it up the inside of him on both his Desmo and the racebike he wheeled out just after.
