The Speed triple is a 1050 - the Street Triple is the 675 and is not competing in the same market. A Speed Triple is £9600 and yes I would have a Speed Triple still over this BMW.
To add - the Street triple has 20% less power, a shed load less torque and exclusivity and yes the BMW is worth £5K more.
You have me. My mistake. Long time away from bikes. But yeah, i'd take a Speed Triple too.To add - the Street triple has 20% less power, a shed load less torque and exclusivity and yes the BMW is worth £5K more.
Although that BMW will be exclusive in the same way that their cars are exclusive i.e. not particularly exclusive.
I like big BMW naked bikes, so I'm easily swayed by this, but as I have a Rockster I might not be able to cope with a good looking machine :-)
But I think that what is easy to miss is that this bike tugs at the heart strings a bit - has a bit of soul, and as almost every rational argument for owning a bike is a bit irrational (unless you are doing the daily slog which I'm not sure yuo'd want to do on your sparkly BM, especially as all mine loved to corrode!)then this is a great thing to have in your life rather than just a machine.
And for big old things mine always handled OK so this should be pretty decent?

You're thinking of Roland Sands of Roland Sands Design.
His father also owns Performance Machine another well known accessories and parts supplier to the Harley-Davidson and custom bike world.
Nope.. Roland Stocker owns RST German maker of quality billet parts for HD... http://www.rst-performance.de/index.php?article_id...His father also owns Performance Machine another well known accessories and parts supplier to the Harley-Davidson and custom bike world.

Does the bike vibrate too much or too little? How can we give it great feel without going too far? These are the type of questions answered in R&D, not what's the headline BHP figure.

Let me re-phrase that - I exactly do - but yes you have to quote the figures when comparing it to the 675 as it's not got anywhere near the same torque or character. It's a completely different bike.
Anyway - carry on - engineering character in is very interesting. I'm sure it was heavily engineered in, when they whacked the defunct air cooled R1200GS engine into a nice looking naked chassis....
It's a simple formula - great styling, defunct cheap engine that's on it's run out and some great styling. Ducati have been at it for years. Believe all the 'character engineered in' bullst you want, but it's just a nice bike with a nice amount of poke and a good chassis and looks. Not about 'getting' anything.

I won't disagree about the simple formula, keeping it simple and making the bike look good are what this is all about. Combine that with the right engine and it makes a great bike. I cannot see what is wrong with the engine they've chosen, it's not the newest technology and that adds to what the bike is about. That in itself is engineering in the character they felt the bike needed.

Looks like the chassis and motor are sorted, how about a decent seat? the R69S had the best seat of any bike , a bit like an old tractor seat but in rubber not metal. The Sunbeam R7 has a good seat too.
Sunbeam S7 you mean? Most old bikes used to have saddles instead of seats. The old Enfield I ride has a proper big tractor style saddle, and it is unbelievably comfy compared to later plank type seats.
My local BMW dealer has been trying to get me to buy one of their bikes for at least 12 years, but none that have ridden have come close to prising me away from my Aprilias (aka the most under rated bikes in the world). I saw this at the Milan Show and liked it, so put a tentative deposit on one, subject to riding it. Rode it last weekend and feck me if it isn't the most fun I've had on a bike since God knows when. Can't wait until in arrives in May. - Credibility check: I've been riding since 1973, have had loads of bikes, saw Barry Sheene race blah, blah, blah......
