What do you recommend without going Bass GT3 style nuts smile ?
Actually surprisingly little-

Definately springs front and rear as you don't look like the 65kg pilot they're sprung for! Maybe a front fork valve kit but in truth, for road use the Showa's are much nicer than the Ohlins. Despite their shiny appearence, the internals on the S forks aren't as good as you'd hope and nowhere near R&T quality.
After that, maybe a Quick shifter. H&M, end of discussion. But be careful as 3rd gear dogs are known to be fragile when abused and they're not easy(cheap) to get to.
Pipe? Well the only one worth looking at is the full Ti Akra 70mm system with reflash/ecu change. Other than that, keep what you have, they're better for midrange and only loose out to the Akra by about 6 bhp at the top.
Gearing, definately the gearing. Maybe 2 teeth up and 1 down depending how fruity you're feeling and maybe Sir would beinterested in a 520 set toloose some weight and parastic losses.
Case Saver. DEFINATELY!! if the chain goes, especially if yourun a smaller front sprocket, you can say goodbye to the engine case on the left. Best 20 quid you'll ever spend.
Rad guard. Put a hole in the rad and you'll be proficient in Italian vernacular by the time a replacement arrives.
And thats aboutit really. Rear sets? upto you,QAthrottle? can be tricky. Slipper clutch? Nice STM wouldn't go amiss but not essential.
Maybe some cosmetic items like tank guard around the key position, some frame covers and thats about it.
Perhaps an Ohlins adjustable steering damper, easy from the bay and other than more carbon/ti goodies depending on taste and preferences,i'd leave it at that.
Oh, and watch out for the classic Ducati trick of overly raised forks. Duc's should sit quite neutral rather than nose down and whilst they may need a push into acorner, they are as stable as Lichtenstein once you're in there. People always seem to drop the nose because it shar[ens the sterring butit actually ruins the handling in truth.

Yes,absolutely like calk & cheese. The 1198 is the EVO2 engine and pretty much everything is improved. Power is way up on a 1098 considering it's only 100cc. Most 1098's make 145 maybe 150 whereas 1198's go 167 to 172 with way more torque.
Didn't realize the 1198 made that much. smile

All sensible stuff - good to know about the exhaust - I don't like the Akra styling on the 1198, so I guess stick with what I've got. It certainly sounds mental enough - louder than 996 with lots of pops/bangs on the over-run and occasional bang when quickshifter changes.

To start with I'm just going to setup the suspension, as money shall be spent on the R1 suspension this winter (plus I'm only 68kg... ahem..) The steering damper doesn't feel like it's doing a lot, but I've never minded having the occasional slapper wink Keeps you on your toes.

Case saver and rad guard are 1st order of the day. I guess changing the gearing that much will require a speedo healer, so will check those out too.

Yes frown It was store it or sell it. It needed a lot of work this winter, so trade in price was not too bad, which clinched the deal.

What a bike. I'd read that the 1198 was a torque monster, comparable to a ZZR1400 though, it must be a right laugh to ride.

3DP - you can't help yourself can you! Not ridden a bike now in over 2 months frown . Next door neighbour has a couple of Harleys and has offered me the chance to go out when my stuff arrives in a couple of weeks. I think I will take him up on the offer, as I am really missing it.

Having said that, the new car is helping keeping my interest up.

Going to look at a SRT8 Dodge Challenger tomorrow as well, to accompany the truck for Mrs Fats (I think I will use it sometimes as well!).

Bikes will have to wait until I get more familiar with the roads over here, but it certainly won't be sports bikes for the roads. Going to try desert riding next year, and if I like that will look to get an off roader, and possibly something completely different for Saturday morning rides. Certainly won't be commuting over here!

The speedo pickup reads from the rear disc carrier so not affected by gearing.

Not crap, but the 1198 betters the 1098 in every dept. If you take a 1098 engine apart and an 1198 next to it, theres massive improvements, from the casings to the idler gears, and on and on. The Evo 2 is the pinnacle of the family. Not perfect by a long way, but damn good and make huge power below 10k so on the road you've always got ridiculous grunt on tap. Yes, a BM might out pace one at the very top end, but it'll struggle to keep up sub 140 leptons, especially as the Ducs monster off corners like a scalded cat.

Love that. Nice one.

Am I right in thinking the engine is the same as/based on the 1098R?

Pretty much.
The 1098R is a 1200 but shorter stroke, bigger bore. Different heads, cams valves, gears, crank, injection system. Very different motor in character too, much reviver than the normal motor, if such a thing can be said. But very, Very fast with better top end than the normal motor and very little loss of mid range grunt.

Fair enough. Cheers.

Have to say that Spareparts' 1098R is one of the most stunning bikes I've seen. Hopefully I'll own one or the other in the next few years...
