You two do realise that the gauge only starts to register just below running temp. Normal running temp is at the bottom and then rises if it gets hotter rather than working from zero. It should just raise to the first notch or whatever you want to call it.
Maybe, but warm water flow shouldn't be occurring through the top hose with a stone cold engine after mere seconds of running. Classic sign of a stuck (or over eager due to age) thermostat. (on mine, that is)

New to me 1198 tucked up in the rearranged garage, The shot with the Speed 3 has my old 1999 Nankai leathers in the foreground which have gone to a new home as of Wednesday too. I used those in many EMRA events from 1999 to 2001 then they shrunk ?

I'm going to be going through this process soon ... how hard did you find rebuilding the carbs ? Was there (will there be) much setting up afterwards ?

Nothing particularly difficult, but I've split multiple carbs down before and feel comfortable doing it. Just be methodical, separate them after marking which one is which, then strip, clean, and rebuild each in turn. I don't envisage too much to set up, just sync them all, then set the idle mixture - all of the pilot screws are at their 'base' setting of 1 3/8 turns out from seated.

I'm going to check the valve clearances first, as this will affect the air flow, and hence the balance of the carbs, and thus the idle mixture for each.

No, that's a tack layer of epoxy over the original panel, followed by a raw 2x2 carbon cloth layover then 2 more epoxy builds and flats then a spray lacquer over that.

I'm only doing one of each lower panel on the bike so the raw materials to make the molds would be an unnecessary extra cost.

Great pic - lovely modern features added without detracting from the classic look. Lovely!
