Looks like a typical day in rural Scotland this time of year.

We tend to clear our windscreens, but that must be a Celtic thing.

R1 Big Bang was 161 BHP and 79 lb-ft. Top speed 183.20 mph. 0-100 6.31 secs

KTM RC8R was 158.89 BHP and 86.62 lb-ft. Top speed 179.56 mph. 0-100 6.14 secs

Aprilia RSV-4 was 155.88 BHP and 75.01 lb-ft. Top speed 184 mph. 0-100 6.74 secs

Ducati 1198 was 155 BHP and 91 lb-ft. Top speed 178.37 mph. 0-100 6.16 secs


All tested on the same day for the speeds etc and on the same day and dyno for the numbers all using the same fuel etc so a good honest comparison in my view. What was surprising was the top speed of the RSV4 when it has much less BHP or Torque than most so it must have good aero.

None of them can be classed as slow as even the slowest was just over 178 mph out the crate !


At almost 166 BHP std this has made me look at Blades in a whole new light.

Shame I don't have a copy of that ... wouldn't have minded a read!

166bhp standard sounds about right ... the PCV on my bike is probably responsible for the extra 4-5bhp and would make more sense.

They are all more powerful than anyone needs on the road.

I wouldn't even test ride a 2011 because I thought they were a gutless heap of s**t.
Guess not.
In this day and age, no 1000cc is gutless!
The comparisons made by the mags are only ever to be felt in track use and most riders wont exploit more than 75% of the bikes power anyway....

The numbers in isolation would mean little but if I assume [dangerous I know] that the test conditions were the same for all.

All had full tanks as the article said so
All were weighed full as the article said so
Same rider on every bike
All testing done at Bruntingthorpe so same distances for every bike
Data logging pack used for all bikes exactly the same.
All run on the same dyno which I assume will amend the correction factor should the air temp change or the dyno cell get warmer [same thing]

So the only part that I can see as innacurate is if one bike can go much faster given a longer distance or the dyno used was poorly calibrated but then they are all affected the same.

So all in all I felt that it was a good bench mark or comparator.

Agreed... in comparison terms I don't think you are going to get better.

Just found my other R1 dyno chart...

2002 R1 5PW with power commander 3, BMC air filter and yoshimura TRS exhaust:


2004 R1 5VY with power commander 3, Race baffles in standard cans, decat Y pipe:


2011 Fireblade CBR1000RR with power commander 5, Exhaust flapper disabled and O2 eliminator:


(same dyno, same conditions and even same time of year)

Interesting how bikes have progressed over the last 10yrs +

But given they all had relatively similar mileages when dyno'd age of the bike shouldn't really matter. However, it shows development does... smile

I'm not talking about age of the bike, I mean there can't possibly be the same conditions etc. if the tests were years apart. Conditions could change from hour to hour on the same day.

Anyway it's all bks and pretty graphs. Main thing is the fuelling is good.
