A picture a day....biker banter (Vol 3)
Discussion
last night at Allseasons cafe...some interesting bits of kit turned up.
A Benelli owner had obviosuly had enough of unreliability(?) and had fitted a Truimph motor in its place...named it a Trinelli..
Lovely old Jap motor'd bobber(best way i can describe it!)
Thsi was based on Kawaaski W800 I think...loved the look of this and the Jap.
Well used and modded Z1000
My friends white/red hybrid below..

Using man-logic I decided to trade my S1000RR in for a slower, cheaper bike...
2009 1198s with full 70mm termi's
Congrats - best colours too. Will be a bit of a handful compared to the S1000RR and don't trust the TC to kick in - it's a bit hit or miss.2009 1198s with full 70mm termi's

I absolutely love my 1198. If it hasn't already got it, fit a 14T front sprocket. Makes town work easier, makes top gear M-way cruising below 80 less vibey, turns 3rd and 4th gears into even bigger monsters and doesn't chuck out speedo as the pickup is a sensor on the rear wheel.
As standard they are geared to about 200 in top - 14T sprocket reduces it to high 180s with all upsides and no downsides.

Its a very enjoyable handful compared to the S1000RR, loves being leant over too whereas the S1K preferred to rocket along in a straight line.

You could go bigger on the rear sprocket to further reduce the gearing by I think that would make the 1st 3 gears a bit too flighty, especially as unless you increase the chain length, it will also start reducing the wheelbase.
S1K and 1198 are chalk and cheese! I run a Blade alongside mine though as the 1198 is pretty uncompromising.
If you have a look down this page, from where I bought mine - BassGT3 who is a fountain of modern Ducati knowledge gave me some advice on mods when I changed my 996S for the 1198.

I had a 999 a couple of years back and fitted a quicker throttle as it was a very long action.
Funnily enough I think it was your review of changing to the 1198 that planted the seed for my purchase.
Appreciate the advice and comments

Just a word of caution on the QA throttle. The 1198 is very different to the 999, especially if you're going to lower the gearing, mainly due to the elliptical throttle bodies that let a lot of air past for not a lot of open angle. A shorter throttle can make the bike VERY snatchy at lower speeds and with the shorter gearing can make it feel really unsettled and abrupt. Truth is, you don't actually need to have the throttle pates opened to the stops. At 85% open there's just as much air going in as when they are fully opened. The ECU mapping stops at 85% throttle as well so bear that in mind.

Thanks for that Bass GT3 - I noticed that the throttle pickup isn't the cleanest at low rpm, so not something I want to exasperate and interesting to know that its wide open from 85%, I guess I'm just used to knowing for sure I'm WOT when the throttle stop is hit.Just a word of caution on the QA throttle. What is the consensus on getting the fueling optimized? As I've read (and can tell) that the Race ECU's mapping is not 100%.
And as this is a picture thread, one more pic -

You can fit Power Commander PCV type of thing, which can be used to overwrite the ECU and adjust the fuelling. With the Ducati lambda removed it can work quite well.
But in truth, the Duc will never excel at pootling, it's not its thing....
