After selling my Piaggio liberty 125 I promised myself I would never buy another automatic scooter. So guess what I did two days later. I went out and bought a 2009 Yamaha XMAX 125. Before I bought it I obviously test rode it and everything was as you would expect however I only took it round the block a few times. So after I bought it and about ten miles into my journey home I slowed down to approach a roundabout and came to a stop. I twisted the throttle and it immediately cut out on me. Started the bike up again and the same thing happen. I quickly realised that I had to turn the throttle open very slowly for it to rev up otherwise it would just stutter and misfire emitting little dark puffs of smoke. When I got it home I drained all the fuel out of it and dried the tank out. I put some fresh juice in it hopping this would solve the problem however it did not. Upon inspection of the spark plug I found that it was very white and this obviously means the bike is running lean. What is really strange though is that none of this occurs when the bike is cold. It runs lovely and you can yank the throttle and it just goes. Advice is greatly appreciated on this one. The bike is fuel injected and I have never dealt with problems on a fuel injected bike.

Blocked emulshion tube.
Strip the carb, remove the brass main jet & larger emulsion tube it sits in, and clean the little holes with a thin piece of copper wire from some stripped back mains cable.
EDIT...just saw it's an FI bike...ignore.
Most likely a sensor then...you may need to get it on a diagnostic machine?

Well i have been talking to the seller and he said he will pay for any repairs. The bike was standing for four months and not running if that has anything to do with it. Im going to give my local yamaha centre a call to see what they say and how much they charge for putting the bike on a diagnostic machine.

I called my local Yamaha stealer and he quoted me £120 to diagnose the problem. With little choice I have booked it in for next week friday. I also called another mechanic and he said it could just be a dirty injector even thought the bike runs fine when its cold. Im going to try putting some redex through it and see what that does. I have a feeling its a dodgy sensor but I do not know where to start.

When cold, the engine is running on a rich map, so more fuel. As it becomes warm the mixture is put towards stoichiometric

It sounds like you have some sort of air leak, it's running lean. Check the throttle body (the rubber connector to the engine mostly), any vacuum tubes and also check the exhaust gaskets.

Spraying something like WD40 around these areas would result in a change in idle if there was a leak.

Hello. Yes i managed to resolve the problem. The cause was the spark plug. After changing it everything was working well and the acceleration was strong. A good mechanic told me to try changing it along with a lot of other little basic things. I was very surprised that the cause was the plug. Good luck.

A 2017 yamaha xmax 125 baught 3000 euros 3 months ago, i spent 1300e to control it, witha little wind, you are out of control behind a truck and you will kill you, i will sell it more than half price but yamaha never anymore. 2 hours to change a bulb, and 3 months struggle to fix it without success, a trapp, no power to pass trucks and loss of control behind trukcs. i say lol yamaha they wnata scooter to look like a 80? goldwing 1500 cm3? lol its obvious and so ridiculous, than i dont even want a new one,. they should add more carenage and i was surprised we dont need yet to remove the engine to change a light bulb but what 2023 reserve us at yamaha? i am sure they cant mnake it, for me its a fraud,.a 500 e piaggio was more linear. its so ridiculous.
