Probably in the same way as me; which is that everyone does it all the time, but idiots keep coming on here talking about it as if it's a new dark art form that they've just discovered.
This, whatever the physics of the situation are, I've never driven a bike where I think throwing the steering the other way improves any sort of getting round a corner. It doesn't make the bike drop faster, it doesn't make the bike lean over any better. And more importantly its just the sort of movement that the steering damper was designed to prevent happening. Its guff.

How does a bike get round a corner without counter-steering?

I'm not talking Queef-esq armfuls of Oppo like one might experience in a car, but a very slight, almost subconscious tweak of the bars t'other way.

This isn't a troll question btw; I'm genuinely interested as a chap with about four hours riding experience under his belt.

I don't mean to sound patronising but I would suggest if you actually took time to understand how it works it may dawn on you that it isn't a different or advanced steering technique, nor is it any different from what you are already doing. It's simply a term of describing one aspect of steering a two-wheeled vehicle, a term that gets a lot of attention because it is counter-intuitive and poorly explained most of the time. Many people have the same sceptic reaction initially but unlike homeopathy counter-steering is scientifically sound and does not depend on your belief in order to work. It isn't necessary to believe in it or to understand it in order to ride a motorcycle safely, however understanding the principles at work can be beneficial in avoiding some mistakes common to new riders.

Are you sure you understand it...? Try turning the bars to the left to go around a left hand corner (at >10mph), it won't work! The steering damper has nothing to do with it.

I love DAS'ers. They've taken over from Born Againers for supplying me with second hand FSH, low mileage mint bikes that have never seen their red-lines and have giant chicken strips.
Quite. They usually need new tyres immediately though.

By having granddads pass on their wisdom in bike meets I imagine? I wasn't around between WWI and WWII you'll have to confirm it with the resident elders.

Can you please refrain from challenging the generalisations on this thread. I think we can all agree the following.

1. All DAS riders are st and accidents waiting to happen, or are super slow.
2. All summer only riders are basically a statistic waiting to happen in April each year.
3. Actively countersteering turns you into a riding god.
4. Born againers - see DAS riders.
5. All riders who started riding young are absolute legends.
6. If you want to give up riding and are looking for an excuse, blame a couple of random incidents where nothing actually happened to you directly and throw in the towel whilst stating said generalisations. It makes for good pub talk when asked why you gave up biking along with the lines "Bikes are too fast", "I was fking mental - traction control and anti wheelie were kicking in everywhere, so it was only a matter of time" and "I had one near miss too many" - all code for "I didn't fancy it anymore and basically lost my bottle".

Fleegle as a born again, DAS, summer rider, really is impressive that he can even pull away in 1st gear without having a ma-hooooo-sive accident.

Now you see I understood that.

My previous post was not a cool bro story, its just to say there isn't a single biker on BB be he ridiculing DAS, born again, or even one of BB driving gods, that isn't a split second from being a horses arse.

I best call the old folks home and book in then. 56 in May. A proper lardy old git. Ridden 1000cc bikes since 1977 at 19 [Z1000A] bought as soon as I could actually walk properly after a 17 fracture coming together where I was the soft impact area for a Mini that jumped the lights and took out my mates CB350 that we were 2 up on.

Had a layoff from road bikes from 1989 to 1991 then again from end of 1991 to early 1999. I took up road racing on a CBX at 41 and rode through until 2002. No bikes again until 2007 then got serious in 2010 when I bought a 1078cc MV Agusta.

Am I dead yet, no not quite. Do I have chicken strips. Yes but ickle ones. Have I crashed, yes last year.

Do I still enjoy bikes. Too ferking right I do. However you need to be aware when you can misbehave and when it would endager you to do so.

Are there tossers out there. Without doubt and I may be one of them, you decide.

Nicely summed up laugh

I do wish these gifted riders would stop giving up though. Who do I go to as a DAS, talentless bd who only rides in the summer for help?
