I second the above. I have a K5 1000, and rode a 2010 blade back to back on two separate occasions for well over a 100 miles. The blade was not a patch on the GSXR. It was heavier, gutless at low RPM (relative to GSXR) and did not have the 600cc-like handling characteristics of the K5.Once again, the blade owner rode my bike and agreed totally that the GSXR was better, so much so that he thought of selling his blade!

I sold my 918 'blade in 2004 and only got my VFR750FL last year after getting my leg over a 'blade again ( I couldn't stretch to buying a 'blade).
I've heard the term Gixxer a few times but don't remember using it in my lifetime. And I think ignorance is bliss as far as this is concerned...

There's a rumour that BN started it and has been trying to cover it up ever since. That's why he's so anti the use of the word "gixxer".

Looking good FJ, with that kind of trade in offer it would be hard to say no, it's been practically depreciation-proof riding. I'd guess as well that while the current GSX-R1000 doesn't have the gizmos and gadgets of it's competitors, it's probably an even better ride than the K5, which in it's day was the king. The Suzuki might be the bottom of the bike mag lists, but if you liked your K5 then this will surely be even better, and at current Suzuki prices they do make a strong case. They're such good looking bikes too.

Yes, I never asked for it. When I did the deal over the phone, he said "we'll put a Yoshi on it in the price" I said ok, as long as it's not to loud.I've been out on it today and done 155 miles. Feels good, but I'm limited to 7000rpm for 600 miles.
I've owned 2x GSXR 1000s, A Fireblade, Zx-10R, Ducati 1098S, Aprilia RSV4 Factory and others....
GSXRs are fun engines and can be abused. I have yet to have a problem with a GSXR Thou, with 1 year being abused daily for London commuting, covering it in piss and st(pigeons mainly).
They are budget bikes, but fun and worth it. The K5/6 was a truly awesome bike and the engines are so much more fun than Fireblades.
But if money is no object, the 1098S/RSV4s do beat it for fun and riding experience but for not much money, you have a track weapon that you can flip flop down the road and give zero fks or commute on it(I'm 6 foot 3) or go out for a blast on Sunday and finger all traffic laws.

I just cannot rate the K5 highly enough. I dont know how good the newer GSXR is, but could the poster who bought the L4 post a comparision with his old K5 on the following:
Hard braking
Steering response
Stability in corners (particularly long sweeping bends)
Change of direction in left-right bends (kind of linked to steering response)
General riding position (my K5 is pretty uncomfortable compared to my old K1 600)
Grunt of the engines from low down (K5 has a very strong engine which pulls hard from low in the RPM)
Any other differences the L4 has which justifes selling the K5 to get one?
My understanding is the only other bike that comes close to the K5 is the S1000RR and that is because it has K5 in its DNA!
