First time ever, but now carry a £8 a month loading due to "having ridden a bike more than 750 miles in the last year". That's a 16% loading on my term life insurance. Are we really that vulnerable?

Life Assurance actuaries have got access to t'internet & YouTube videos you know biggrin:...maybe they've been scared to death of some of the stuff people post wink

If it's a common practice to load bikers' life policies it must be a relatively recent development as they never even used to specifically ask the question when I was a financial adviser over a 30 year spell.

Oh yes ...my employer has reminded me in the past im the most expensive member of staff for life insurance ...

if you hold a competition licence for motorsport and/or take part in track days will increase it some more

and other "dangerous" qualifications/hobbies e.g I used to get a loading for being a mountain expedition leader etc

if you do 20K business miles a year you are effectively in similar life risk group to offshore workers....thats how statistically dangerous driving a lot is these days (just a car, let alone bike)

The "risky/dangerous" pursuits questions have always been around but as I understand it the OP is saying his loading is just for riding a bike (on the road?) for more than 750 mls p.a. ??

I had to pay extra on a car insurance policy I had years ago because I was an airline pilot. When I questioned it, I was told "we know the hours you work and you're driving when you're tired". Fair shout I suppose.

Hi Nightflight, do you think your name might have given the insurance company a clue? biglaugh

Only £8 a month sounds cheap to me.

I never see a motor cyclist ride sensibly these days. Total disregard for the law. Never knew speeding and under taking was legal.

Maybe if car drivers were more observant and had better lane discipline, undertaking wouldn't happen... as to speeding, I do tens of thousands of miles a year around the country and the ONLY vehicles I see that aren't speeding are those with speed limiters fitted by law, so don't just point the finger at bikers.

Can I ask who you guys recommend for life insurance. I only started thinking about it recently as I want to make sure that my GF wouldn't get chucked out of our flat etc.

That sounds like a bit of an assumption. I think they were probably just winging it.

Cavendish Online without question. You pay a fixed set up fee (30-odd quid from memory) and they then plough their commissions back into reducing your premium. Cheap and easy and you'll get a policy underwritten by a household name (L&G, Aviva and the like).

I don't recall L&G asking me about biking when I took out my life + critical illness insurance.

Look at the username.

And it is unfair to say all bikers are speeding law breakers, when a vast proportion of new motorcycles sold don't go fast enough to be worth prosecuting for speeding, and the ones who are speeding are doing it on purpose, and generally only where safe.

It is the idiots who sit at 50 mph through a village who should be shot.

We're better than you so don't have to abide by your petty rules.
